Excellent work benches so far, mine are no where near as nice, but I'm still young and have plenty of time to gather ideas and put them to use (I hope!).

Best advice I have would be to take the time to pull everything off the bench. Seeing it clean and empty will motivate you to keep it that way.

And as for all the stuff that was on it, evaluate whether it's worth keeping, and find/make storage bins and locations for everything...

I was using 2 crappy 30" x 6' benches together for years, they worked ok. Then I got a free table from work. 3' x 8' on casters and no good place to store it. Horizontal surfaces seem to be a junk magnet at my house, so something had to change since my habits won't.

Free table.....

I procured a few steel frames and a couple of maple tops that my work was throwing away. I put it all together to come up with my new bench.

New bench frame welded......

A coat of paint.....

Lots of hole plugging and sanding.....

Refinished tops added. I'm not happy with the way the finish came out, but I have so much material on it now I will have to wait a while before I sand and apply a better finish coat....

Bench in its new home. I still have to notch the top of the rolling table so it clears the center bench leg, then it will roll completely under the new bench. It sticks out a couple of inches right now. The final size is 3' x 11' and about 38" in height.

Over here....
I've been running an ad on CL for a couple of solid wood doors to build a decent workbench top. Nothing has ever been just quite right. My son called yesterday and told me he had some from an office building renovation I could have them if I pick they up today. I'd rather drive through downtown Dallas on a Sunday than any other day of the week.

Here's some pics of the doors I'll be using for the workbench top when I get that project fired up in the late spring. These puppies are heavy!

Hey Jimmy B, did you use clear polyurethane or something? I really like the look of that top

I spend a lot of time at this bench. Anything from automotive repair to circuit boards, it's done here. All my equipment for diagnostics on CPU and game systems is present and accounted for. Tools are stored in a three drawer craftsman, and 42" HF rolling cart.
ytesy7u3.jpg

All the needs of a man, stored and loved. My shop has 12' ceilings so I needed as much floor space as possible. I hung 4'x8' pallets from an I beam and secured it to the wall with load rated chain on the floating end. Works great for out of the way storage. Plus it's FREE!!

You guys over the water are very lucky having big garages - here in the UK we mainly have single car garages so space is tight (some new build houses have garages so narrow you can't get a car in?).
Mine is a prefab 24ft x 10ft which is slightly bigger than normal but still small - i can just get my 4x4 in and squeeze around it to detail.
Anyway back to the workbench - i bought these Stanley units as i wanted the clutter free look, fitted MDF flooring sheets on top to match the garage walls and ali edging - which i'd seen this board before as i didn't think to do a self build which would have given more storage space :(

Is the polyurethane for floors a more durable finish?

I don't know. I had a gallon of the standard (not marked specifically for floors) left over from doing my kitchen last year and used that for the first coat. When I went to Home Depot to get more I found this. I assume it's more durable, and the cost was a little more.

I've used floor poly for a couple of workbench tops and its been great. Since I usually have some around the house its a cheap solution.

Here's mine. I bought the metal legs from Northern Tool. I have a friend who builds custom cabinets and he made the bench top.

This is the first time I've seen my entire work bench in nearly two years:

WorkBench_zpsb96489f8.jpg

The three holes drilled in the top are for the vise laying on the rolling cart...just waiting for the mounting plate I made to come back from powder coating.

Normally, there's a pile of random parts and fasteners piled everywhere...I like it so much better when it is clean though.

Very nice cabinet. I have 5 used Vidmar cabinets and a used Lista cabinet that I would like to clean up and paint but have not gotten around to doing it. Part of me wants to sell the Vidmar cabinets and buy a couple of new Lista cabinets and be done with it.

Where did you get the top?

The bench looks great. Have you thought about putting holders on the side of the left Lista box to hold your dust pan and broom. I did it to mine. I find it's better since it clears up space and does not drop left over dust all over the bench top.
It is funny how a BENCH TOP is the most powerful magnet made. Everything gets attracted to it.

The top is from Michigan Maple (butcherblock.com)...it's 108" x 30" x 1-3/4". I actually purchased the top through Indoff Inc., which is where I ordered the Lista cabinets.

Thanks...so far the broom and dust pan are working okay in their current location, but I have thought about it previously. I might pick up a couple of magnetic hooks and give it a try to see if I like it better.

What's the height of your Listas?

They are the HW1050 base cabinets (45.25"H x 40.25"W x 28.5"D) - with the butcher block top the counter height is at 47". I spec'd it out so that it would be a standing height work surface, since I mostly do random odds and ends types of projects, including quite a bit of electrical work and work on R/C cars. I'm 6'4", so it works out pretty well for me, although it can be a bit of a stretch sometimes to reach stuff on the pegboard due to the bench depth. I really waffled between the HW1050 and the next size down, the HW900 at 39.375" tall...the HW1050 gave me some extra space for bigger and more drawers, so I opted for the extra storage at the expense of a work surface that is higher than most.

I have a drafting chair on order that should be here Monday...I'm hoping it will be a nice finishing touch, and allow me to sit when I feel like it.

Mine arent as pretty as some on here, but for ~$7 total invested I cant gripe.

I lagged together a few southern pine 4x4s that were free from the scrap pile at work. Quick and easy is the name of the game for something that will be thoroughly abused. A splash of poly makes it look good and protects the wood to a lesser extent.

Add $3 worth of cabinets underneath, and I had a 4' and a 5' bench. 4' shown, no decent pics of the 5' alone. Please excuse the mess.

After I moved I discovered the two benches wouldnt fit in the new garage and leave room for a welding bench, plus they were a bit of a pain to move, so I decided to combine the two.

I tore them apart and added a few pieces...

then pulled out a hand plane and set to making them smooth and even again...

then I found a few more sticks and made a pallet for underneath (sorry, no pics of it). With a few toe boards and some poly leftover from refinishing our hardwood floors, the current incarnation shown below. Id guesstimate its ~500 lbs but is easily moved with the pallet jack.
