I'm in the process of rebuilding my workbench. It's a solid wood core door I'll be using for the bench.

I'd like input here on how to handle the edges.

I'd like to put an aluminum edge strip all around it for protection.

Anyone do such a thing?

I would route them in, then nothing will "catch" on the lip.

After reading this thread diligently, I realised I had not contributed my own workbenches:

Home Workshop

My home workshop is in the basement of the house my Dad built in 1949. It is where he did his stuff, and it is where I started my journey with tools.

This was always Dad's workbench to me. It started life as a dining room buffet. My sister still has the table and chairs in her basement.

This is 'my' workbench that was built by a friend of Dad's for when I moved out. I moved it back when I bought the house from Mom over a decade ago. It is actually built from plans for a reloading table.

Can-Am Garage

The small workbench near the door where I do most work. Put it together from leftover wood. The top is actually old deck boards from the cottage the previous owner left. Periodically I scrape and sand them down. This was taken before I installed the vise I grabbed from Kijiji and the pegboard I found stashed from previous owner.

This is the big bench where I have a small press, another couple of vises, and where I sit to do electronics stuff. If/when there is internet, I would have my PC there.

So I finally got around to posting my setup that I built with my dad last year. For a townhouse garage it's not bad.

My temporary work benches as I remodel the garage. I'll build one where the temp is now and WILL keep it cleaner/organized. Or not. The space to the right will be filled with kitchen cabinets, upper and lower. Still working on ideas for counter top/workbench for those. I can't tolerate a mess but somehow end up with it anyway...

mr. nick,

I like your Miller-matic 211 and portable welding bench. I have the same set up and really enjoy using it on my projects. I use the bench once in a while as I have a larger welding table. But the bench is handy around the garage for a temp work table surface.

Various iterations of my bench. It started out as a shelf/bench at a flower shop/plant nursery.

Brent (and others),

I'm thinking about some kind of an organization set of bins (Well more of drawers) to store all of my bolts, nuts, screws, fittings, etc.. I have one of the small/cheap plastic ones like the one below.. but it sagged and is well, pretty cheapy. Any one have any suggestions for something like this that they have used/liked that could be wall mounted?

PCO6, those look nice! And Metal? Where'd you get them? Got an idea of cost?
They're probably about 15 to 20 years old and I think I got them at Canadian Tire. They weren't expensive - I'm guessing less than $20 each. I haven't seen steel ones for quite a while. Everything today is plastic of course. :(

Thanks Bill. Here's a detail of how I did it. It's 2 pieces of uni-strut bolted together back-to-back and then to the bottom side of the cabinet. The rollers are from glass sliding door for a shower. The wood block on the top of the cabinet stiffens it up and provides a spot to screw the rollers to.

I'm sure you've struggled with the rolling hardware cabinets at CTC and other places. I'm happy to report that these work better!

After being inspired by all the nice workbenches already posted, I decided to build one of my own. I don't have a garage and I live in a 3 unit condo so the basement is shared space. I had to be careful not to take over too much space before people start complaining. I was getting tired of doing projects on the coffee table (as was my wife :)) so I just went for it. The frame is made up of 2x4s and the top/backsplash/shelves are all 1/2" MDF. The bench height is about 45" due to me being 6'3". The floor slopes a bit so its not exact, but it level all the way around which I'm happy about. Roughly $50 in supplies later, I have a pretty decent bench. I may or may not paint it in the future but for now its fine as is. Still need to run some electrical to it but I ran out of time last weekend.

No pictures, we already know what they look like, but I bought a
Gladiator 6' maple top work bench for my garage.

Man, that thing is ROCK SOLID!

I almost had a heart attack dragging it out of the vehicle, assembling
and flipping it upright and moving into place.

Solid bench. Wonder how long it's going to be before you walk down there and find one of your neighbors using it for a potting bench!?

I don't think that will be a big problem. One year, I disassembled, restored and reassembled a '79 Kawi KZ650 in the basement of a three story brownstone in Chicago. The hard part was getting it out in the springtime.

You have some cool stuff going on there. Ay more pics of the rest of your space?

Ed
Thanks Ed. The easiest thing would be for you click on my forum name (PCO6) and go to my albums for more photos. I don't have any overall shots. It's a simple 2 car attached garage and half of it is ripped apart right now as I am finishing off the walls, ceiling, electrical, air, insulation, etc. In hindsight I should have put everything into storage for 6 months and blitzed the garage makeover. Instead I've been moving things around while I work on the garage itself and that has made for a LOT more work.

It's always great to see on GJ how others are using the smallest of available spaces to create a functional work area. Great job so far using what you have. I hope the neighbors respect your efforts and your space. It makes me appreciate my basic 2-car garage much more. Keep it up!

Let's just say my neighbors aren't the type of people to need a potting bench. I've done all the yard work and outdoor upkeep. I think they would just rather pay someone else to do it. Personally? I like doing it because it gives me a break from my day job in a cube farm. I don't think my neighbors know much more than how to replace a light bulb. I just worry about them complaining I'm using up shared space even though they weren't going to use it for anything themselves.

Counting down the days till I can move out to a single family...

Well here's my little 3/8 reclaimed steel welding, wood working what ever needs to be done work bench. It's as big as I could make it do to size restrictions in the garage.

As you can see the garage isn't much wider than the door so with this in there:

There isn't much room for a lot more but I did use that bench to make everything for the air bag suspension I designed for this car so it gets the job done. Can't wait for the move to GA and a real garage so I can get a nicer shop space.
