"Hi Thom!"

What are the boxes above the recepticles for?

I was going to have an overhang/shelf thing, and those boxes were for switches and spot lighting. Don't know if i'll still do that, so they're just sitting there for now.

and an 8' wide Lista toolbox (weighing about 1600 lbs empty) and costing about 1/2 what you'd pay for a Snap-on equivalent

I like those boxes, and i think i may sell what i have and get something like that.
I need to find a distributor for them

Here are some, the one with the wheels is where my mechanic usually parks himself. When we need more we throw a board across pallet boxes, they are very useful.

Yes it does pivot. It is also for hanging cords and hoses to drop down on to projects to keep them off the floor. I have several versiosn of the swingarms for lights, nice to be able to move them a bit sometimes.

Here's a pic of my work bench area. The front end in the pic is from my Mustang that I'm working on right now.
The other Mustang, the parts donor, is next to it there with a portion under a deck I built to store parts while they're removed.
The work bench itself is a small 3/4 ply top I built around an old Snap-on toolbox mainly to support the Wilton Mechanics Vise there.
My thought was that if I made it smaller I wouldn't allow it to get cluttered up all the time. As you can see that's not working out.

Here's mine. It is 4'x8' and has a 1/2" steel top. It all weighs about 1200 lbs.

This is my first post  . Here is a pic of my currently cluttered work bench. I got it from my dad a while back. It is home made but done very professionally (don't know by who). I'm in the process of finishing up construction of my new 24'x40' shop and the workbench is still in the attached 2.5 car garage, thus the mess. I have found that rolling microwave carts make nice rollaround benches and you can often get them for free. When the drywall is done in the shop I also have a nice 10' long timber bench that will go in and have plans to build a metal welding table that will be on casters to move around.

I second the microwave carts. I found two of them at the county landfill and brought them home. Cleaned them up, replaced a caster on one and they're good as new. Mounted mt drill press on one and a grinder on the other plus have storage on the shelves underneath.

Ok, here is a pic of the mustang. It is a 1966 289 auto car from California, aka rustfree. I have a 450hp '71 351Cleveland 4V I am going to stick in it when I do the full resto in about a year.

Here is mine. It’s bolted directly to the wall via hinges. I have supports that go down to the floor that can be removed incase I need to fold the bench against the wall. Sorry for all the clutter, I’ll get a much better pic after I take the stang out this weekend for a massive e-bay selling spree I have planned........

Here's a shot of mine. There is a drop down area sized for either a Dewalt miter saw or my Makita chop saw. Sorry for the mess...

Nice Bender! Did you cut the metal yourself?

Thanks!! The arms/dies are JD2 Model 3. I built everything else - cut with either a chop saw (mostly) or hand grinder. Welded with my Millermatic 210.

Here's the finished product:

Sorry for the hijack... :bounce:

Here is another workbench I have. I picked up this one for free out of an old farm building. It wouldn't be good for detail work but I think it will be good for tear downs. A couple big block engines wouldn't even stress it. I can really jump on it and it doesn't move at all :rocker:

Hello all, first post, be kind.
Sorry to bring back an old thread but wanted to share
I built this in the last year of high school.
4x4" legs, 2x4 rails, strengthened 1/2" MDF with folded galvinized steel top.
Solid as a rock
Cheers

Hard to tell details, but....

I made three benches just like that (w/o the steel top) several years back. Literally.
The plans were out of Popular Mechanics or something.

You could park a car on top of them and they wouldn't even know it.

Looks good!

Lip, I think the popular machanics plans were where I got the original idea from, then modified to suit my tastes.
Your right these things are tough as, I really like the design, simple and STRONG.

That looks like a nice sturdy workbench, excellent work.

Any closeup/side-view of how the 2x4s are bolted to the 4x4s ?

Russel, I did an entire portfolio on the bench, but have lost it all, had some great pics of the entire production process but alas have no idea where they are.
The 4x4's are notched to accept the 2x4s so they sit in flush in the 4x4s, they could probably just have been glued in but I did both and glued + bolted them in.
Cheers

Hand me down workbenches

I got these from my employer, due to one of our depts closing down - another casulty of overseas mfg. :headshake

I bolted them to the beam and framework behind them, and am planning on adding a section in the middle to join them. They even have overhead lights and shelves on the back and underneath. Not bad for the price!

"Is it true that there is a marijuana problem here in Vietnam?"

"No, it's not a problem. Everybody has it."

A big pat on the back to the first person that can say where that is from.
