Anyhoo Since I moved I had to replace the corner bench as the old one didn't fit, and I since added some lights to the underside of the cabinets and above the main peg board.

Then I got to thinking and thought hey some drawers wouldn't go astray for extra storage to keep stuff off the bench top so I knocked them up this morning out of some ply from work and a quick trip to bunnings for some drawer sliders and timber and voila.. nothing exciting but plenty handy..

Did you actually find some straight timber at bunnings? My local only has timber to suit arty type applications, nothing straight or flat, I made the mistake of buying my fence pickets from them and they were all defective in some way.

I finally got to an age when I could no longer work on the floor so I made this when I was into big 4x4s and wanted/needed a table strong enough to beat on. I still have it and use it almost daily.

Its made from all scrap steel, its 6ft. by 6ft has 1/2 steel top and 4x4 legs and 2inch angle underneath. It has a 1 foot setback on the legs so they don't get in the way ( one side has a 2 foot set back cause I was going to cut it down to 5x6ft but never did) and a shelf under for my hand held electric tools. Soon I want to build a tool caddy for hammers and clamps.

Godspeed
MrC.

Dimensions are 90" on the back wall and a 70" on the right side and its a 2' deep all around. I forgot the height but I am 5'3" and its a comfortable for me to stand or sit.

I still need to redo the peg board but thats a project for another day.

Wooden lab cabinets on the bottom with Harbor Freight tool chests. The wall cabinets are metal lab cabinets. 15 drawer blueprint cabinets for small parts storage.

The top is 1/2" plywood, then 2x10 treated lumber, then 3/4" solid maple tongue and groove flooring (5" planks). The edging & back splash are 3" solid maple. Six coats of polyurethane to finish it off.

I just finished building two benches. The first is a height adjustable wood working bench with a front and tail twin screw vice and the second is just a standard metal top bench.

Looking good Kiwi. How does that table go up and down?

Also just wondering out loud. WHY DO PEOPLE REPOST ALL THE PICTURES JUST TO SAY LOOKING GOOD?

Thanks . It has two scissor jacks, you can seen in the last photo the two rods. One Jack controls the height and the second lowers a cart on wheels so it can be wheeled around the workshop.

Wow I love the way you did the tops. Might have to steal that idea.

That is a great looking bench! Do you have a picture that shows the front side of the tool box area? Again, great work!

Not as nice as your guys benches, mind is delegated to the basement (no garage) and I use it for smaller things and mainly electronics, but ...

Got pics of the build?

Here's what I have:

Picked up some lab cabinets for about $40-$50 each from a lab supplier in central PA. The small parts cabinet is a blueprint cabinet from an architectural salvage place in Cleveland Ohio.

Set them up in the "U" shape:

DSC04392_zps46c9e0d5.jpg

I decided not to use the lower ones on the end as it was too far into the floor space.

Here's the original setup in total:

DSC04410_zpsf187a335.jpg

Took off all the door and drawer fronts and used the Rustoleum cabinet restorer to paint them black and then polycrilic'ed all of them.

DSC04408_zps998eba0b.jpg

DSC04415_zpsf2dd8a8a.jpg

Took the wheels off the Harbor Freight tool chests and set them on a framework of 2x6's that I assembled on the floor. I then screwed a 2x6 onto the back wall behind the tool chests to support the back of the bench top.

At first I layed down 1/2" OSB and then glued the solid maple flooring T&G together and layed it on top of the OSB. I ran everything long for later angle cutting.

DSC04430_zps036ba4fb.jpg

Thought the tops looked too thin, wanted more of a "beefy" look, so I simply got some 2x10's and laid them on top of the 1/2" OSB and put the maple T&G on top. Clamped it all together and them cut the angles to fit the blueprint cabinet in and cut the ends to length. Used a circular saw. Also added a cabinet height refrigerator.

DSC04438_zpsdedd11c8.jpg

Built an end cap and trimmed out the sides and back splash in 3" solid maple. Also built a frame for the blueprint cabinet out of 4x6's

DSC04455_zpsf8541caa.jpg

DSC04453_zps58300de1.jpg

Took apart the already painted lower cabinets that I decided not to use and used the sides as end panels for the island. Because they were shorter, I used a piece of the left over maple flooring and ripped to width to fit in that gap. Eventually painted that black as well.

Painted the blueprint cabinet wood base black and the tool chest wood base red.

Polyurethane on the tops, about 6 coats.

This a great idea. Much less work than having to make a steel frame for it. And it also keeps the height lower. Did you bolt the USGenerals together? Did you bolt them down to the 2x6s?

Nope, they are heavy enough full, just to sit on the 2x6 frame. Haven't moved a millimeter since installed.

I put this in as a temporary set up when first got into my garage. I got the cabinets from a buddy after his wife took them out of there kitchen. Funny thing is she picked them up at a yard sale several years earlier. I did paint them and put new pulls on them in an attempt to spruce them up. I'm thinking that I will convert the center section into a set of 6 drawers soon so I guess I need to start saving by beer cans for money.

I've been watching the bench threads a lot lately. Just getting my garage put together, figure I'll make my own benches. I'm vertically challenged (5'3")so my benches will be a few inches shorter then most.

My question of the day is about how long to whip one of these up? I figure my first one will be 6'-8' long, and 24" deep.

Main workbench with a rolling workbench that fits underneath when not in use.

Arctic Ragtop, how do you like that arrangement? I was planning on doing something similar to use for my mitre saw. I'd store it on the lower shelf when under the bench, then when rolled out, the saw would move to the top for use.

Its great. I also have a shelf for the miter saw that pulls out and puts the actual cutting surface at the same height as the workbench, so I can rest a 2x4 or whatever I am cutting on the workbench. I designed the three to work together and I have to say that I really like the way it works. You can see the miter saw shelf to the left of the workbench in the pictures. It is on fixed legs, however I am going to cut a few inches off and put locking casters on so it rolls nice and easy.

I've been thinking about getting one of these. How's this working? How did you divide up the drawers in the cabinet? Got any pics of an open drawer?

These are two of my Grandpa's benches. He was and still is for the most part a small engine mechanic. The first one is his main bench. Being a lift table it works great for working snowblowers or tillers since it can be set at any height. It has a small garage bucket on one side. This works great when cleaning mower decks, the **** can just be pushed over to the hole. On the end there are trays where he keeps his 1/4" and 3/8" sockets and ratchets. He built the bench in the late 50's. The story I always heard was he saw it in a magazine and wrote to the company for info to buy one. They in turn sent him directions to built one to his surprise. The ram and two stage pump came out of the dump and have worked all these years without problems. The second bench is the welding table. The made that one in the late 40's when he was a welder at the Gehl company. The top is a plate flywheels for balers flywheels where made out. He got a rejected one and welded back into the plate it was cut out off. There is a hub on the bottom side. The vise is an old pentiess that has been broke a couple of time. I want these and the rest of his tools some day. The wooden mallet on the bench was my great grandpas and is one hell of a can crusher. He is 88 so hopefully he gets another 40 or 50 years out of them.
