Some really great looking benches on here. Here is my setup. The garage is still very much a work in progress.

Here's my question for all you guys and gals . What is the prefered depth of bench 24" , 30" . Thinking of getting maple butcher block for my top and just can't decide. Any help will be appreciated !

I prefer 30". My bench currently is 24" and I could use the extra 6" of depth.

Here are the only tools I had access to and utilized for the project:

that's an awesome all-trac!!! :)

also, i would have preferred 30", but when i was purchasing the top, they only had the 25", and it's still plenty useful to me.

I finished building this bench the other day, I was in need of a small bench to put tools and **** on while i was in mid mid project. I did'nt need anything heavy duty since i have a bench with a 1/2" plate top. So this one is made of 1 1/4" 11 gauge tubing with a 1 1/2" clear coated birch veneer top. I also built in removable plastic cases for fastener storage.

Next stage is to add underhung drawers of some sort. Well, paint the wall & steel next, then drawers. Counter is 20' long. Steel frame underneath using the slab foundation curb as base. 20' of 3/4 ply then counter mounted to that. Pretty solid. Don't like stuff on the floor so this keep legs out of the way. More open feel.

Just built myself a new one. I have had a few in the past but I never moved them when I moved. I just bought my first house and I needed somewhere to go through all my garage boxes that were in storage. Eventually I will build some along the walls.

Go big or go home, just picked this up today. One inch steel plate top and one quarter inch wrap around. Eleven foot eight inches long. Need to make two drawers, sand it and paint it. Dude loaded it with a forklift onto the trailer, could barely get it out with archery picker.

That is sweet. Curious if you can share the cost; assume you had it built to spec somewhere. Also, if you (or anyone else) has an idea on how much just the materials would cost, that would be good to know as well.

Thanks

Built my first workbench with my Dad this past weekend. He is a carpenter by trade and gave me a lot of great pointers while designing and creating it.

I don't have my own garage at the moment as I live in a 2 bedroom apartment with outside parking. I wanted to build a solid workbench to put in my spare bedroom/office so that I could have a space to work on miscellaneous projects.

My design criteria was simple:

- Solid, sturdy bench that would last a long time
- Simple, clean, and useful construction
- Enough space to spread out and work on different projects
- Solid, thick work surface for the top.
- Shelf underneath for storage.

Due to limited space I wanted to go with a 60" surface but we ended up finding an old maple butcher block that was 72" long and I fell in love with it so I had to use it.

We started with 4 X 4's at each corner to provide a sturdy base. Then we built the shelf and upper frames out of 2 x 4's. We fastened the frames to the legs using 1/4" lag bolts and 3" screws countersuck at 45 degree angles where necessary. We used a finished piece of 1/2" plywood for the bottom shelf and then topped it off with a 1 3/4" piece of maple butcher block that we rescued from our barn. Since the butcher block was too deep we cut it and used a 4" tall piece as a back splash!

The butcher block was a VERY heavy piece. We kept the top separate to bring in into my apartment. We brought the frame in first and then brought the top in and set it on the frame. I still need to fasten it down when I have time.

I wasn't snapping pictures as we went through the entire process but it's pretty self explanatory. If anyone has any questions please feel free to ask!

Because the butcher block was free (just needed a good cleaning, and two strapping males to carry it up three flights of stairs into the apartment) the entire bench only cost me $57.00 from Home Depot. That's wood and hardware.

Let me know what you think!
