solid as **** was my criteria after i ripped the top off my other workbench which was subsequently rotten.... was left by the previous owner and looked as old as him - in his 60s.

I'm planning something similar to your stepped-down area, for router table, drill press, etc. Are those lap joints connecting the 2x4's to the 4x4 uprights?

Please excuse my ignorance on the correct terminology as I'm not sure what a lap joint is ( mechanic by trade, wood working on weekends). Each joint where a 2x6 meets a 4x4 is notched so the 2x6 sits flush in the notch then attached with screws. Hope this helps.

You might want to check the State of Colorado Joint Marijuana Committee's recommendations for proper joint definitions. Click here for a link.

I get to use the smiley guy again.

Thanks for the link. Didn't know there were that many joints at ones disposal. Still learning how to do woodwork. Can fix most any engine and fab just about anything out of metal. But carpentry and woodwork still a newb on.

My Vidmar workbench with Wilton vice. Bought the 3 Vidmars over a year ago with a Lista cart for $90. The Wilton cost me $20 at a swap meet. Sold the Lista and got the wood top for free. So the bench cost me nothing and ended up with cash in pocket. The top is not bolted on yet but it weighs a ton so it stays in place.

Decided I needed an extra workbench a coupla weeks back.

Had two essential requirements,
I wanted to have a spot to gently, beat the snot out of things ... and the whole thing had to be able to multi task,

.... so after messing with google sketchup and sifting thru my junk piles,

... I ended up with this ..... :eek::eek: ... :D:D

3" SHS x 1/4" wall thickness, with some 1/2" plate either end - as a foot, and a beater section.

Tripod11b_zps314b739e.jpg

Sometimes you want stuff to stay in the same spot when whacking it with a hammer ... sooooooo

Tripod14b_zps6fd05143.jpg

Tripod16b_zps784b6bd5.jpg

Hit stuff too hard - and sometimes you need to stick it back together again ..

Tripod17b_zps2b6c4ce0.jpg

... and the way I weld ... this is a bit of a nescessity .. :D

Tripod18b_zps492ecdf7.jpg

Seems adequate for the sorts of things I tinker with.

Just finished building this today.

Boxes are the HF 44 and the side box for it. The white thing is a mini-fridge. Hard to see but at the top right corner of the mini-fridge is a bottle opener riveted to the frame. Framing is 1.5" square steel tube. Shelf is single 3/4" plywood. Top surface is double layer 3/4" plywood.

That is in line with what I am planning for my one car garage; looks good and simple. What tables are those or are they shelves non-stacked?

Does anyone know if HF has some tool chest / storage with deeper drawers than the side tool box?

I know this particular post is from a while ago, but how are you guys attaching these wooden tops to your boxes?

I attached mine simply using Loctite PL Premium construction adhesive. My frame wasn't 100% straight in all the joints so a nice thick bead of PL adhesive filled in any minor gaps and creates a super tight bond when fully set.

Clamped it all down and put heavy stuff on the top overnight. It isn't going anywhere.

My neighbor is moving, so he gave me this bench with the small vise on it. Can't wait to get it cleaned up, painted, some new wood and mount my bigger vise on it.

This is my effort. Not great, but managed to knock it together in a morning & afternoon session. Thinking about adding a second drawer.

Looks great. I especially like the full width drawer. Will definitely be stealing that one.

Quite a few months ago but I'm finally bored enough to post it.

Work was throwing away this:

20131018_221459.jpg

So I made this: (behind the bench grinder obviously)

20140222_220602.jpg

Nothing special, but the important part is the total cost was exactly $0 as all the plywood an hardware I had laying around.

Over the last 2 days I added some flip down wheels on my new bench. They work great but I need to figure out a way to lock them in place because when the casters turn a certain direction they flip back up and drop the table.

These are all pictures of the underside of the bench.

Thats an awesome idea with the drawer! I'm gonna have to work that into one of my benches sometime soon.

I built this wood working bench about a year ago. It has a built in dedicated spot for my chop saw and router.

I recently added a few full extension drawers for tools and screws.

Just knocked this up over the weekend.

A basic workbench for odd jobs. Unfortunately we don't have a shed - just a carport.

Need to straighten up the cupboards a little and level the bench, but the adjustable feet will make that simple enough (I hope!)

Nice job on the free bench. Curious about the grinder stand. Is that really stable when in use with one (or is there two stacked) disc brake rotors? I have old rotors laying around and always think they are not stable enough to keep something that tall from moving around when grinding.

Here's my humble bench:

The lowers are leftover cabinets from a remodel, I'm not very happy with them to be honest. They are pretty weak, support legs on the center one broke the other night.

My father is is a retiring millwright, he called me up and told me the day he retires I'm to pick up his work tool box and take it home to my place, he doesn't want it. I'm hoping to sell his box ( not the tools ) and that Lista box to fund replacing my existing cabinets with tool box lowers. I don't mind everyday tools on the wall but I prefer the more expensive stuff to be in took boxes.

Here are two that I put in this last week. The first was a 84x42 bench that doubles as a garage for my table saw and the second was a quick down and dirty 72x22 for general work. the later will receive drawers in the near future. The big unit was all 4x4 timbers with Mortise and Pinion jointing, with no screws, nails or glue the small was a basic 2x4 frame, for light work and storage. The tops to both are solid core doors that I picked up for $8 each so the only thing I ended up buying to put these together was six 4x4s.
