a pic of my white bench in it's new home in the 24'x40' shop. Note the book holder that swings down from under the cabinet. Holds shop manuals at eye level yet out of the way and out of the oil while working on things. :rocker:

That's freaking awesome! Best thing I've seen in a garage here yet! :rocker:

That fold out book holder is pretty damn cool! Could you post some more details/specs on it?

Yup, cookbook holder. My In-laws recently remodeled their kitchen and passed this on to me! Too bad they wouldn't let me have any of the old cupboards. I'll try to get a closer pic of it, but I bet you could find one with a google search faster.

Bit of a mess but gets the job done. Bench on rollers so I can roll it outside to paint of refinish furniture.

I can't tell the actual colors, but it looks like you've used a non-white for the walls--gray? Silver-white-gray?

I'm kind of liking the less-than-sterile white for the walls... a color like the above gives a certain richness to it all vs pristine-ness that white gives...

Hrere is my bench I inherited from the previous owner of my house. It is extremely heavy. I accidentally turned it over while moving it out of the garage to epoxy my floor. With my jeep and a little winch action, I was able to get it upright again.

You have got to be kidding....that thing is massive...in terms of steel....in terms of lifting it yourself....how much do you think it weighs

I have no idea, but it is one heavy SOB. I moved it on a couple of 300 lb capacity furniture dollies. They where really overloaded, and once I got the bench to the edge of the concrete, "It fell off on its own". You should have seen my face when it went over...priceless.

How is the floor....also I noticed the bottom shelf isnt the reason for the weight because of the bend in the middle....I would personally go and get some heavier steel to hold the weight....just some advice

Yeah the bottom shelf is not as sturdy as the rest of the table. I am not sure what happened, but the bottom shelf has a cut in it that weakened it and I guess over time it has sagged from use.

not much, but here's mine. The most expensive part was the plywood...I got BC so that there would be a smooth side. The top is 1 1/2" thick. Very heavy and very sturdy.

Here's mine. Bottom is built in three pieces to allow for moving easily when the time comes. Home built birch plywood bottoms, painted, storing most of my portable power tools and air tools. Top is made from 4 locker room benches, solid maple, that were discarded during an update to the school that I work at. I had a local hardwoods shop run them through their industrial planer as my little 10" Ryobi wouldn't dare handle the job. I trimmed them, jointed them and then put the top together. Baseboard trim is made from recycled gym flooring from the same school remodel. The two cabinets above, to the left and right, were left by the previous owner and I made the string of oak cabinets that connect the two. Peg boards in frames above the bench, and to the left and right. Finished dimension of the bench are 30" T, 29" D, and 9' L

It's never this tidy, so I take photos when it is.... :spit:

I'm in the beginning stages of remodelling/finishing the garage in the 40-year old house my wife and I inherited from her parents. The first thing to do was upgrade the workbench situation. I was going to get a Craftsman bench but found them to be quite flimsey. I got to looking at the bench that was here and found that, while really dirty, it is incredibly sturdy. After adding some masonite sides and a new floor, this is where I started.

I found a guy selling diamondplate on eBay and had him cut and bend some pieces for me. A quart of high gloss gray paint and an afternoon later and this is what I have.

The top is 2 feet by 5 feet and it stands 40 inches to the top. I do a fair amount of mechanical work on our two Mustangs and the diamondplate should be really durable and stay looking nice.

My further plans for the garage are drywalling the walls and ceiling, new garage doors and a Race Deck floor. I'll be documenting the transformation on my Cardomain page.

Hey Dave,

Is that an old DeWalt Radial Arm Saw back there? I have one just like it from my dad.

All the bottom cabinets have 300lb rated drawers that pull out so I can easily put my chop saw, etc in them. Also you get full use of the whole cabinet. Stold the idea from my wifes kitchen cabinets.

I'm getting ready to start planning my workbench for my new shop. Any additions to keep me motivated?

Freebie butcher-block top...lots of sanding...refinishing...weld and paint a frame for the base using Home Depot angle iron. I've got a ratty old 2x4 and 2x6 bench for the greasy stuff.

"Forge" bench from Home Depot... I think they discontinued it. Has a power strip on top with several outlets. Not a bad looking bench, but the top stains easily.
