That's a beefy bench! I bet it weighs a ton with the 2x4's on edge and a steel top. That's a great idea, what is the thickness of the steel top? I like the idea of the receiver hitches on the bench but also on a stand alone so you can have versatility.

The top is .125 steel sheet.

hey do you mind posting a photo of how you mounted your trailer hitch receivers?

Sure, I took a 5 inch square steel bumper from an old travel trailer and cut some angles out of it. Welded some receiver tube on the end and drilled a couple holes for bolts. Here's my mobile stand. Still working on how I want to mount a couple wheels on it. Leaning towards a dolly style where I just tilt and roll. Any suggestions?

Here's my DIY bench freshly built/painted, not much, but works perfect with the space I have...

This thread has been a great resource for the new bench I'm putting together. Here's my current basement workshop bench. It's made of leftover 4x9 rough cut lagging timber.
View media item 49949The bottom stretchers are dovetailed into the uprights. The uppers are just a half-lap with a pair of lag bolts - I was sick of the dovetails by the time I got that far. The top is from a damaged drafting table, over plywood.
View media item 49950Even though I let it dry out for a year some pieces have still warped and cupped since I made the bench. That's why it's not furniture-grade wood to begin with....
I wanted to see what timber framing was like so I used a chisel and plane to do most of the work. I've successfully removed that urge from my system! The top is drilled for my vise but lately I've been using it lower, on a receiver tube mount. It was supposed to be a thru-wall mount for my garage, so I could easily use it inside or outside, but it was easier to drill and cut the timber than the brick wall of the garage. The back side is the "receiver" part, just some scrap angles welded together.

They finally came in sale again. Now for a lot of reorganizing...

Yeah I'd been waiting for them to come back onsale (they appeared at the black friday price today so I snagged all my local store had :) )

20 feet of workbench/storage that'll go down one wall of the shop. I'll bolt them together to make one big unit when I install them. I'm just leaving them all loose right now while I get insulation and drywall in.

Artsy pics with the good camera:

My wife said she's excited to not hear me wine about lack of tool storage space any more - lol. Lots of organizing to do.

Finished installing the 10 GA stainless steel top for my work bench last night. Finished painting the drawers and doors earlier. Even made a shelf in the window of SS. The top is 10 feet long with my vice on one end and I will be mounting an arbor press on the other end. I have (3) four foot lights over it right now but am mounting 2 eight foot ones in their place. It should be bright enough to do brain surgery if I want. The garage came with all the drawers and cabinets & 2X8s on top for a makeshift top. I also covered a small set of drawers to keep it all the same look. The only problem is it is so dam good looking I almost hate to work on it and scratch it up

Geek, awesome combo with all of those Husky benches. I'll have to keep an eye out for what you do in your shop.

HemiSAM, really nice frame for your bench, did you build from scratch?

OJ: the benches are now on the other side and the cabinets are on that side.
I really should put together a shop thread as I progress to windows/insulation/drywall phase :)

The west wall is getting windows the entire length of it (above the Husky workbench cabinets):

p.s. I just got a kick out of your post count being 401 - considering the significance of that number through Toronto :) (I used to live there).

wow very nice. did you get a deal on a large buy?

They had a "black friday" spring sale and had them on for $199.

So five of them (20 feet of toolbox storage) was $1000 - or less than the list price of the 72 inch box at HF :scared:

You ABSOLUTELY need to put together a shop thread. Looks like a lot of good stuff already, and I'm sure much more to come. I'd be very interested to see. And as I'm sure you've seen, you'll get a lot of interest in the bike too.

Lol, I hadn't noticed that, but since I spend way too much time on the 401 in real life, I'll be glad to see the number of this post put me past it. :)

Edit: Just had a thought... bikes, photography, and cool workshop. If you haven't checked out sakurama's epic thread (containing all three, among other things) give it a read!

OJ: Thanks for the tip on Sakurama - he has a great thread on ADVrider - we've both been members of the Orange Crush there forever

I have a Sprinter build thread on ADVrider as well that has over a million views:

...so I need to decide if I have time to do more than one build thread :D

I can only imagine the looks you got from the people in the store when you asked for 5 of them. :lol_hitti

I got really lucky and found a local store that had five in stock and none were dented. Unfortunately due to the Saturday morning crush I couldn't find anyone to help and had to load them myself. The place was such a zoo I think I could have grabbed as many as I wanted and nobody would have noticed.

When I bought the 5 six foot tall kobalt cabinets I cleaned out two Lowes stores and ended up having to go back with one set of dented doors.

Overall out of 10 major cabinets I got pretty lucky with only the one flawed doors that were easy to replace :)

Yes, built from scratch using 1-1/2" square tube and 1/4" plate.
