Just bought my house last summer and built a bench in the basement next to the garage.

Nice bench, where'd you find those plastic corner legs and hutch blocks?

Here's da bench.

It's not much but it sure is sturdy. And, it's where the magic begins. Pic 3 is some of that magic.

Made from: cabinets on sale at Home Depot, garage sale chest of drawers, lumber left over from house construction, lumber and paint left from other projects, caster wheels off old toolbox.

Nice stuff datsunfan. My neighbor has a custom cabinet business so all my cabinets are from kitchens he's remodeled.

First off is the main alter of construction, nothing special, fairly solid but not bolted down. The two main features are the 2 inch lips down the long sides, good for clamping and so forth. The other feature may be useful for some-one with limited space. I have welded a heavy wall piece of tube to one end and I have fitted some of my tools with a piece the fits inside and locks into position via the bolts. The possibilities are endless, tools, mandrells, even a shot bag stand.
The other bench, the smaller one on wheels, I couldn't live with out. I can take it right to where it's needed, carby and dizzy rebuilds to welding and shaping this poor thing has seen it all in it's short life. Thanks to Adam - fellow metal butcher - for the idea.

I have an 8' craftsman bench placed directly in front of my lift bay. It's decent but lacks lateral stability. I'm planning on bracing the legs a bit before mounting a vice on it.

I'm getting this exact bench from John. It will be used for my fly tying passion. I have a couple of Whelen/Costco 8 foot benches in the garage too, but those are common. I hope to have this wooden classic set-up and in use in about a month. Can't wait!

Sorry Caper, I have no idea what brand the vise is, I've had it for a few years, it's fabricated steel, not cast, so there is no name on it. Glad you like the pipe mount.

This is nearly a bench so I guess it counts. It started as an old card file cabinet, that I used as a regular tool box for years. I finally bought a proper toolbox and roll-cab a few years ago and this now houses my lathe and mill tools. I made the top section recently to make the often used tools more accessible.

Got mine setup today... Came from Costco High quality and very sturdy. I recommend this bench.

That is cool how you mounted the parts bin under the workbench. It is hard to tell but it looks like the fasteners are showing at the surface of the bench. How did you go about mounting this bin? Is it bolted through? I want to mount mine like this too. Thanks

Didn't know there was this thread, so I had started another... so I figure I might as well post in the right spot now. :bounce:

I have 2 - 1/2 so my space was limited. This is what I ended up with. I built this over 4 years ago now and its been doing me well.

Here's the end product:

For the full build see link, which has photos of most steps I took:

That is the main bench where most of my work gets done. Unfortunately working in cramped quarters has become a way of life for me and my bench shows it!

This is the remainder of the bench that spans the width of my 2 car shop/garage

14.2 feet long by 2 feet wide. almost 1/4 inch galvenised with 5/8 ply wood backing. just installed 2 weeks ago and in the process of oraganising and putting stuff away. Already enjoying it tho and pretty soon there should be pieces from a vortec 350 I am building for my car

Here is the beginnings of my current shop. Some of my stainless tops came from my old shop.

Yes they will get dirty, yes real work will be done in the shop, and no they aren't done yet.

I still will install shelving/upper cabinets above the counter tops.

My other benches are not built yet.

Here is my tiny workbench. It's not much of a workbench but more like a desk that holds my laptop when I am in my one-car garage detailing. The laptop provides the tunes while I work. It also holds the detailing products. One of my friends who is a custom home builder built this for me in return for some interior dress up pieces I was selling. I drew the plans and he built it. The other main reason for this "desk" was to get the fridge off the floor because of the 8" baseboard the runs around the garage. It made the fridge stick out too much, taking up valuable floor space. The best part of the desk is the plexiglass that is set into the top so that I can put pics or whatever under the glass to dress it up.

This is the best I could do. I've never taken a shot specifically of the workbench which is odd as I have pictures of everything else!dave

I'm jealous of the room some of you guys have. I'm shoe-horned into a 21x22 box built back in 1925.

So I've got to be creative.

My main work bench is made out of a second-hand solid-core door. To the left of it is shelving made out of some hollow-core doors. I mounted them at the same height as the work bench so I could use the shelving to extend the work surface.

Bench1227395135.jpg

I also wanted a work surface at desk height (as opposed to counter height, or whatever the term is for standing benches). So I modified an old wrought-iron shelf frame and made a table I could use as a light duty work surface and also a drafting table.

Artistic1205200260.jpg

It folds up or down, depending on what I'm using it for.

I recently added a small welding table, which displaced my freestanding drill press. Here it is, buried under some saws. It's at the same height as the main workbench. You can see I also raised the table saw up to be at the same 37" height.

SmallTable.jpg

Here's the drill press moved to the original work bench:

Drill_Press.jpg

The vise has been moved out in front of the bench. I mounted dual-hitch trailer receivers underneath on either side of the work bench. Now my vise, anvil and grinder can move to wherever I need them.

I added a second bench for wood projects, and I made it fold down from the wall so it wouldn't eat up floor space when I wasn't using it.

Fold+Down1227395492.jpg

I liked that so much that this weekend I added another fold-down table -- this one for welding. It disappears against the wall like the old one:

Folded_Up.jpg

I added a third hitch dual-receiver into the wall next to it. It's braced to the studs with 2"x2"x1/4" steel angle stock.

The new table doesn't use the same type of base as the wood-working table, since it needed to be even stronger. Both of them could easily handle 1000 pounds, though. I realized I could store a lot of my c-clamps and vise grip clamps behind it, so they're out of sight when they're not in use.

Folded-Down.jpg

That's five benches inside of one two-car garage.

Jack,
That is a great design you have set up. Do you really keep it that orginized all of the time or was that just a photo op?

Photo op. I figure if I'm going to take a picture and preserve what I did, it ought to at least be clean.

Plus, with a place this small, you really need to go through it when you're done with a job -- blow out the dust and get it cleaned up -- or it's going to end up being too messy to be useable.

But during a project (like building this table), it gets very messy:
