My Addition to the thread - I Have a few round my little workshop - all covered in ****, this was my fathers original bench - its older than I am with plenty of abuse over the years. I want to repaint the base and give the old railway sleeper tops a good sand... They have lasted so well I wouldn't want to replace them
I think I would keep that bench just the way it is; great patina and great history.

Nothing fancy. Small space, used scraps and discarded pieces whenever possible.

Rolling work table + tool storage from an old kitchen cabinet.

Added slides to support the drawer, and a sliding tray to take advantage of the depth.

Workbench proper.

Red Columbian vise mounting arrangement is a legacy from my pre-workbench days. The vise is bolted to 2" of glued-up boards, which can be clamped to any relatively stable surface. At one time I had a second vise on the other end to hold long pieces across both vises.

Wilton is not mounted yet. Still not sure where that's going to go. The whole space is in constant flux and general chaos.

Next major purchase will be a proper rolling tool chest that will, hopefully, swallow up some of the tool chaos and just leave rusty parts chaos.

Here is a bench I am working on. Built with kreg jig HD. I am putting polyurethane on the to and painting the bottom. I need to add the shelf on the right side yet.

Nice!!!

Couple of questions:

What color are you planning?
What did you use as a protectant on the top?
What type of wood for the top?

I really like this idea, but want to make sure the top is durable and not easily dented/gouged

Thanks in advance

This would be awesome with a tailgate and bedsides going around the corners. Put it on casters so it could roll out for a party, sweet. Now I can't wait to replace that crappy bed on my old C20...

Here's my "clean" bench. It will be used to plan projects in the shop, set beer on, watch TV at, stuff like that. Gnarliest stuff it will see is electronics, r/c cars and guns so I wasn't worried about the durability of the laminate top. Shelf on the bottom left will house something, just not sure what yet. Middle is one of the cheapo Craftsman drawer boxes they had on sale for <$100 a while back. Right side is a U-Line fridge my dad had laying around in his basement.

Legs are constructed of sandwiched 2x4's to create a sort of dado joint with the runners.

Hi
I am in the process of planning a workbench so this thread has been great!
I was wondering about using 3/8 inch thick hard carbon steel for a top (some guy around here is selling some surplus steel) but I don't know if that is the wrong kind of steel.
I know 3/8 steel is fairly thick but is hard carbon steel brittle?
Thanks
Brian

I'll be moving into my new shop/house in a few months and will be taking some ideas from this thread. Re-purposing some old stuff will probably how I go.

Coming back for a second look, I really like this one. Nicely done, Dave. I love the perfect little area for the receiver and the built in fridge and tool storage. "Clean" is the right word for this one.

Really nice work on the doors and drawers, mach158. Those can be such a pain to line up and yours look like a perfect grid.

I went from this old built in workbench that came with the garage:

IMG_0067-XL.jpg

To this a few months ago:

IMG_0006-XL.jpg

Workbench tops were from the old office desk systems from the front office at work with built frames. The filing cabinet drawers on the right are nicely sized for storing what needs stored.

Went with two 26" and one 41" roll cabs minus casters for tool storage.

Seems to be working thus far.

Part of that process was replacing the old undersized fuse box with a new load center, new wiring/outlets, insulation and OSB sheeting, and replacing the menagerie of fluorescent lighting fixtures with Eight 4 Bulb T-8 fixtures. Will continue the rest of the insulation/sheeting/rewire this fall/winter.

Mine are far from the dream workbenches I've seen in here but I will post them up any way.

This is my most used bench. I put a sheet of stainless on top because the fiber board had seen better days.

Here is my soldering and "clean" bench made from an old countertop and some unistrut scraps.

And my folding weld table. I'm about out of room but needed something for welding on.

Dude, you have a good set up. I'm frankly a little tired of seeing rich guys garages with wall to wall Lista cabinets and Snap On boxes.

There's some charm to a bunch of Craftsman boxes, homemade workbenches, and little Home Depot compressors. That was the kind of stuff I wanted to see back when I first found GJ. Just regular guy stuff for dopes like me.

Glad you like it. I do the best I can with the little bit I can scrape together. Dumpster diving is my hobby of choice.

I know how you feel, I don't have near the tools some people got or really anything, it's nice to see a garage that doesn't look like a bmw dealership lol

There's a ton of charm in stuff like that, and the reality is that most of us don't actually need huge compressors and miles of pristine storage cabinets. Don't get me wrong, those things make for some pretty amazing setups, especially if you have the need for it all, and I love looking at them too. But for me, when I might pull out my compressor a couple times a year to put something together, small and efficient (and affordable) is all kinds of win.

I was in need of a large work bench to serve as both automotive tool storage and machining tooling storage. I recently moved in to my new shop (40'x80'). The last bay being dedicated to automotive and the first, second and third bay to fabrication and machining. Two mills and a lathe located in the third bay. I really liked Steevo's choice of materials so I designed a decent sized work bench island to be located between the auto and machine bays. The work bench also has two stool sitting areas for those assembly projects that require time. These pockets also incorporate receivers for jig, vices and such. I'm almost done with just the top steel plate to fit, then disassemble for paint.
I looking forward to put this in service as it should speed up the process of locating the proper tools for the process at hand.

That is a nice bench, well thought out and purpose built. I still haven't gotten to get my US General boxes to slide into my work bench like I planned but love seeing others like yours. The receiver mounts are a must as well as the place to sit down. Post up some finished pictures when your done!

Thanks guys, I got the top legs broken and fitted. It fit really nice and flat. I placed several precision ball bearings with no roll. I don't think I will secure the top to to the plywood decking.
The two receivers worked well with the third member jig.
Disassembly is next for prime and paint.
