Sometimes big photos obscure any words you put above them. When I first looked I missed that you had said anything. Not a complaint, big photos are always better.

Anyways, when I first saw the photos I was going to ask how do you like the vise in the corner. The bench looks like the left half was built after the right, and the vise may not have been in the corner until the rest of it was built. Just an odd thing I thought when I was looking through.

If it was me, I'd put the vise to the left of where the block is there and keep the grinder where it is. I'm a lefty, that may not be ideal for you.

The vice isn't bolted down yet, the whole bench was built at once also that's why I'm having a time trying to figure out a spot for them

Got my newly built workbench in place. Just waiting on my buddy to come across some steel for the top before I mount the vise. If not, I have a 36"L x 24"W x 1/8" thick sheet that I can use for the right half of the bench.

Looks great! I love the old gray Craftsman cart, too!

Moved into a new house and the last thing I wanted to do after putting together things and painting walls and cleaning landscaping was builidng my own workbench.

Wife was in Home Depot and found this and brought it home for me.

Id say it fits pretty well.

It's covered in tools and clutter now but that will all change soon enough.

Brent: your little bench just keeps getting better.

ALL: great thread showing all your benches and i have a question. do any of you put rubber padding down in front of your benches if where you might be standing for long periods of time?

My wife had planter faciaitis (sp?) about 5 years ago so she got some better shoes and bought some pads for the kitchen for the 3 work areas she stands and she rarely complains about her feet now. i started getting feet issues and before they were totally trashed i got some new shoes, inserts and put some rubber pads in front of my benches.

anybody else do the same and maybe a few pictures might help show others how to help not only their feet, but their backs?

cheers

Drives,

I too have bad feet and can't stand in one place for very long without pain. I got one of these mats because I saw them used at work in the airplane factory (Boeing):

http://www.pksafety.com/ergokneel-pad-5020.html?gclid=CPbN1ab7qNACFcEbgQodEWsBFg

They come in various sizes and are very cushy. Ergo Kneel also makes nice kneeling pads.

Drives--Standing on a concrete garage floor for long periods of time can give anyone foot problems. A few years ago, I picked up a pack of foam floor mats every time I went to HF and spread them around the shop, mostly in front of workbenches. It is not a permanent solution but has been inexpensive and effective for me.

JOE & JIM: great posts. i put down 3/4 inch horse mats in my garage and shop and i just found and installed another layer of 1.5 inch rubber mats in my 10x15 home's garage. here's the thread on horse mats and i'll post a few pictures here too.

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=342512

the rubber mats that are used more in restaurant's kitchens with holes in them might be a bit softer and i'd probably put a layer of those under 3/4 inch rubber horse mats if i move and build or buy a new big shop.

even the kitchen mats or something cushioned will help for those of you that have back or foot pain from standing and/or working in your shop/garages.

Thanks! I appreciate it.

I want an anti-fatigue mat but I haven't looked around for one, yet.

Hi all--I note this is a very old thread, but anyway..I have just joined (via pintrest) and as we are building a new (dream I hope ) garage , I got onto this site for ideas. Awesome to say the least!!

Abstamaria--great garage/workshop!! can you tell me what brand that car hoist(s) is and where you got them?--what height is the column?, and do you consider therm to be better or worse than a standard 2 post clear floor fixed hoist??they look to be quite portable, which is a great idea .I cannot find anything similar on internet ATM.
Will post new garage pics when its built and fitted out

Many thanks. The 2-post lift is a MaxJax; if you Google, you will find the dimensions you need. There are also several threads on it here, which you will find useful. What I like about them is that they are low, are made for standard-height garages, and are not obtrusive. The are also easily movable, as you noted.

I just finished this bench with the built in HF tool box. I had the 38"x48" top already so I built it to fit.

Sorry Im so late to reply.

It ended up being 80 bucks.

WELL WORTH IT.

The thing is solid so far. Ive been beating the ever living hell out of it and dropping stuff on it and drilling through it.

So far so good. Although I think once I get things setup the way i want them I'll be redoing the top and making the legs permanent instead of foldable.

Strong Ties and Leveler feet. I have since built 3 more, the leveler feet are the key for me.

Burl: nice looking old working bench.

Doorfx: are you happy with how it turned out? looks great from my chair?

Thank you sir !
Yes I am very happy with it !! The under cabinet lighting is great for my old eyes. I get more than a few raised eyebrows and " that's in your garage? " lol
I finally added the kick plate on the lower cabinets

Thank you for the kind words !!
It's 1/8" and you can work it just like wood. Straight cuts on the table saw with a fine tooth blade. Same with the miter saw. I had to scribe the bottom edge as my floor is not perfectly straight or level as you can see. I used a cordless jig saw to make those cuts. Aluminum is very soft and easy to work with.

Is that wide enough for 2 tool boxes.

Very nice setup.

Thanks

I designed this around a 38"x48" top I already had so there isn't enough room for a second box. Each box is about 18" and tubing adds 4". So 44" plus a little wiggle room, say 1.5", for a total of 45.5" for the frame. The angle adds 1.5" to each edge so I used a 2" overhang. The top would need to be about 48"x50".

I used the HF casters so they should be ok for one box but not for the weight of 2 box's fully loaded so bigger ones would have to be designed in but could be done.

Here's my temporary workbench in the shop at the lake. I'll build a proper bench once the shops finished up!

Here's mine mocked up

22c8775e1296d1d08a9d0c40ad0adb9c.jpg

A friend is replacing his kitchen cabinets so I'm getting the old bases.

The reason I'm posting is to put the word out (might be old news but I was surprised) about finding solid wood counter tops in the scratch and dent section of Ikea.

Solid oak 98 x 25 5/8. Regular price 189. Got two of them for 60 bucks each.

Heres the overall view as I know we all love pictures.... Place is still a work in progress as we've only been here a short time and the workbench is the key to getting the rest of the garage layout situated.

In this thread, especially with the high res pics, I like expanding and snooping through everyone's stuff.

I know I'm not the only one. LOL

Here's a new one I just finished to store and use some bench top tools. I was using lateral filing cabinets but they weren't stable enough. The drawers are 9" deep on 100 lb. slides and are the new home for my sanders, jigsaws, angle grinders, etc. It's on retractable casters so I can move it around as needed. My old workbench is very similar to this but I am planning on replacing the top soon with a proper woodworkers setup.

did you build that box? I'd like to see inside the drawers on the bench if you wouldn't mind. That's an idea I may be stealing depending what fits in there and how nicely. Thanks.
