Thanks Fisherguy. It's my dream shop so won't be moving from this place anytime soon. It's a hell of a good place to hang out by myself when my wife and two daughters are "sync'd up".

I know exactly where you are coming from. That was the best line I have seen in a while.

Here's my bench made from Unistrut, 2" x 8" Douglas Fir, 3/4" Particle Board, Wilsonart Black Counter Top Laminate, 0.0625" Stainless, nuts and bolts and glue.

Finished dimension is 31" x 234"

New shop is 30' x 60' (3 - 20' x 30' bays)

Center bay workbench wall:

Laser level is perfect for this application (one damn handy tool I might add):

I cut access holes in the drywall so I could bolt the unistrut to the structural steel:

Oversized one side of the unistrut for socket wrench access.

Here's the hardware to put the main strut structure together:

Unistrut is cool stuff.

With no welding, some hardware, and wrenches you can build some seriously heavy duty structure, and just your imagination.

I have a friend that owns a sawmill, all Douglas fir logs and lumber.

When you ask him for a 2 x 8 it is a full 2" thick, and 8 inches wide, nice.

What a great guy, called him up on new years eve... "hey man, you got any 2 x 8's?, you bet, come on by and get some" Awesome! $87 bucks and I didn't even strap them down in my pickup to get home, just a slow cruise with some nice boards... I love nice boards!

Lagged them down to the unistrut with counter sunk carriage bolts

Attached everything down to the floor

Finished the other workbench. This one will be my ‘gun bench’ for cleaning, smithing, etc.

Finally able to add mine here. Just built the garage as an addition to the house, and I’m thrilled with how it turned out. Thanks for all the wonderful ideas on this forum.

Dude - your garage makes me so jealous and makes me want to go back to harbor freight and spend lots of money.

What did you use for under cabinet lights? How do you like them and do you recommend them? I have a similar set up and am in the market.
Thanks!
Jon

Some LED strips from Home Depot. They connect together so it’s easy to turn them on and off.

What’s everyone using to paint their benches with? I don’t want to do the work surface, just the legs and sides etc

Can’t go wrong with Tremclad. I particularly like the 25% extra cans that are cheaper in another aisle from the spray cans in Home Depot around here. I so need to just buy a case next time I see it. Just wish they had other colors than just gloss black or white.

Just bought this from a local company. Seems very well built. Will be getting put to good use shortly.

Here's a few we've built for clients here in mid michigan. My buddy and I started Michigan bench co. Since there is nothing on the market that's nice and sturdy like a handbuilt bench.

 Looked up the facebook. I'm not too far from you, I'm in Saline.

Did you find some plans for that? Or is that an original?

Very impressive and compact.

Nope, all original. I designed the whole thing myself, about two weeks of thinking about what I wanted it to do then 2 days of sketching before I pulled the trigger and built it. I was originally thinking steel but quickly realized weight would be a serious issue.
