They also have a scratch and dent outlet. The last time I ordered there were not really any scratches on the pegboard but the mounting flanges were bent/distorted. Not really hard to straighten them back out. They also sell cheap accessories but they are just thrown in a box together and get scratched up. I did not care as the price was so much lower than Amazon, etc.

https://cheappegboard.com/copy-of-8-pack-of-pegboard-scratch-dent-wall-control-16in-w-x-32in-t-blue-metal-pegboard/

Thanks guys - I’ll check out the scratch and dent!

Are you saying you will attach the 3/4 plywood with 2 1/2" screws and then attach a vise or are you saying you want to attach the vise with 2 1/2" screws?

I'm assuming you meant the first. If that's the case then I say go for it. I have a 3/4" plywood bench top on a 2x4 frame with a vise attached on a corner. The plywood is attached with 8d nails about 12" on center. I didn't build it; it was here when I moved in 20 years ago. I've used and abused this thing for 20 years. The two dogs on the vise at the outer edge of the bench are attached with 3/8" x 3" lag screws that go down into the 2x4's. The third dog is bolted on with a 3/8" bolt through the 3/4" plywood. And like most vises there is no fourth dog.

EDIT: I don't know why the 3rd pic doesn't open in the thread. you can click on it to see it, though.

Thanks Atch and you are correct in your first assumption. The 2 1/2" screws are used to secure the 3/4" plywood top to the 2"x4" base frame. I'll certainly take your specs and mount the vise with the 3/8" Lags into the 2/4 and I really like how you mentioned a "3/8" bolt for the third dog that isn't directly above a 2"x4". I think I have just the hex-head 3/8 bolt that'll do the trick!

Love the pics, BTW. My vise is nearly identical to the one you have pictured!

What are the dimensions of the worksurface?

The top worksurface is actually an "L" shape that conforms to the bump out on the wall (You can kinda see how if recesses towards the back corner 4"). The surface itself is 92" x 24", of which approx 20" in the recessed cavity is 28" deep. My plan is to mount the vise on the front-left corner nearest the camera (away from the US General Tool chest). Thanks!!

Probably the cleanest it's been since it was built many decades ago. It's currently on wheels so I can easily move it around the garage as I've been doing all the insulation, electrical, drywall, etc. It also makes a great working platform while I work on the ceiling.

All that said, it will be nice to have a work bench better suited to the space once all is said and done.ef8d77e5e14af9e3dfec4d0b2111661b.jpg

Schnutzy: do you store your clamps on the back of your cool old workbench all the time or just when it's sitting in the middle of the garage?

welcome to the forum

CD: is it always that clean and organized? mine is occasionally after I move some stuff around, but my FSD (flat surface disease) prevents me most of time from having any open space on a workbench and i've got 3 in my 9x15 portion of our 2 car garage.

also welcome to the forum

When the garage was bare studs, I had a couple 2x2's running across the wall that all my clamps were holding on to. Those are currently on the back of the bench because it was the most out of the way place to put them. I've not yet decided how I'll store then once everything is moved back into the garage

figured i'd toss this in here.

I started shooting competitively again 2 years ago, branched out from just shooting USPSA to steel challenge and rimfire challenge.

yea that means more guns,
more shooting gear,
more ammo, ect

I was driving myself crazy not being able to find what I was looking for, and really had no place to sit down, teardown/clean guns.

I cleared out a corner of my reloading room, checked the growing woodpile in the corner of the basement, and literally threw this bench together on a sunday afternoon. it's just the right size, and I found a purpose for the old office chair that's been shuffled around in the basement for at least 10 years.

also built a vertical gun rack for my competition long guns, added some simple shelves to the side ( more scrap wood) to hold range bags and pistol cases, added some hooks to the stud walls to hang my competition belts and rifle cases.
used the space between the studs for reloaded ammo storage and 22LR stockpile. picked up some small ammo cans to separate and store magazines.

yesterday I repurposed a couple kitchen base cabinets w/butcher block tops that I ripped out of my kitchen 2 weeks ago, and removed an old bedroom dresser i'd been using for storage.
( still working on the kitchen renovation, buts it's mostly done).

also a pic of my reloading bench I built 23 years ago...

What are those blue and red plates that are attached to the front edge of the bench right in front of the Dillon?

Hey all,

Love seeing all the great work benches and thought I would share one I just built from almost all scrap wood.

The top is an old counter top a friend gave me and the drawer handles are some old wrenches I had laying around along with some old bolts from my yard art 48 Ford truck.

Enjoy

I don't do a lot of woodworking but i got tired of cutting wood with the saw sitting on the floor so i built a folding shelf for a small table saw on one end and my miter saw on the other end

Here is my fabrication bench. I picked this up so I wouldn't keep burning the top of my work bench welding.

That bench is way too clean, even for a reloading bench!

Cool bench! I like the design and the repurposed wrenches and bolts for handles.

I have to get mine finished ASAP now to get it in my basement. I have to make room for a Smithy CNC mill I'm picking up this summer. I have zero floor space in the garage.

I'm redesigning my bench based on input from you guys and I currently have overhangs on all 3 faces. I definitely want to keep the front over hang for clamping but I'm wasting space on the left and right sides. I don't want to give up the option to clamp something long ways but I've had it this way for 5 years and never used that feature. I have HF workbench cabinets left and right up against them anyway but more surface area is nice and the edges are already rounded over.

Good Luck getting your bench down to the basement.

A CNC machine would be way cool but not sure I'd be any good with it.

Thanks. I have a couple buddies that will help, but my biggest hurdle to finishing it has been weather. It's been raining or too cold to get the last bit of the work done on it.

It's been a long time since I've done anything CNC, but I'm really looking forward to it!

Building out the inside of my shop now, with the first workbench completed and more to come. This one is 11’ long, 32” deep, and 37” high. 6x6 posts, 2x6 to tie those together, and 2x12 for the top base. I then had 10 gauge (1/8”) steel formed to fit over that, with a 4” backstop formed up as part of it.

Tpopz: looks like you've made a nice bench and cabinet set up. care to post a few more pictures of how you supported your bench top cause I don't see any legs on it.

also WELCOME TO GJ and hope you need a few more tools and a some skills cause if you hang around that's what you'll get.

Schurt: looks like a great shop. sounds like maybe you had the 1/8 inch top made for you? how much and was it at a steel fab or machinist shop locally?
