Alex, have you considered using the machine screw inserts for wood? The T-nuts are great but if they aren't under tension they tend to fall out when the wood dries. When I drop the bolt into the hole it sometimes knocks them out and that doesn't happen with the screw-in inserts.

I used these on a workbench in the last house. Probably use them again in the new house.

1st is a cobble added on job, I wouldnt mind a new custom designed top but it wouldnt really help me. The other bench has a vise on it. 2nd was a general bench then remodeled in to a electronics mess,,, I mean bench. Finally cleaned the top off when a guy moved and found a couple things I was looking for and its a bit back to general use again.

I have been looking all around for something like this, was hoping not to use the t-nuts for the very reason you gave. Thanks for the info!

Just wanted to share my workbench. I consider my bench more of a "maker's" workbench. I do a little bit of everything with it. It's not too big and not too small (top surface is 30" x 60" and height is 32"). For what I use it for, it has worked really nicely for the past 4 or so years that I have had it.

Here are some of the features:

- Rollout bottom drawer storage on 4 fixed casters with work surface hinged top. Gets taller and bulkier items up off the floor about 12 inches to the right working height.

- Recently added the drawer just below the workbench top (top is two 3/4" sheets of plywood laminated together). The drawer has two areas. Towards the front of the drawer there is a divider 7" from the drawer front to form a tool tray. I always liked tool trays on workbenches but fixed tool trays on the front of the bench were in the way most of the time. So I made my own drawer that had enough friction on the drawer slides so it pulls out and stays put. The the back half of the drawer then is for storage.

- Also recently added a foldout 18" wide worktop extension with folding and adjustable height leg. The new foldout now gives me a workbench surface that is 5' x 4' so it becomes more of an assembly work surface.

- My roll around table saw also attaches to the right end and the workbench serves as an out feed table.

- Above my workbench (first pic) I have a 6" deep shelf attached to the wall with strong magnetic tool strips. I highly recommend these for a maker's workbench. This has been extremely handy.

- Under workbench top I mounted a cheap spring loaded plastic sheet window blind. I pull it out before painting or staining projects and it keeps the workbench top protected and is easy clean up afterwards. Let spilled paint etc. dry and then let it roll up.

- I found that the size and location of my power strip mounted to the front right workbench leg is the best all around for me. It has plenty of outlets, compact, it's out of the way and power cords aren't all over the top of the workbench.

Let me know if anyone has any questions about the bench as well. Thanks for looking and hopefully this will give someone else an idea or two for their own workbench.

I got these old wood shop benches from a school we were working in, custodian asked if he could put them in or dumpster, sure. Told him I’ll take whatever you have plus he had some nice big maple bench tops. The benches are from 1930 wood shop, 2 1/2” maple tops and the base is all 1” and 3/4” maple, real heavy and they came with vices and dogs.

Nice save. Being freebies, and nice at that, these count as a "you ****". The ones my school.had ended up in their annual bon fire, even after I offer to pay.

A lot of the work benches I see just put my little work area to shame but it's all I can muster up. I built it back in 1979 when I had my house built. I got the work from scrap lumber I picked up at work until I had enough to built what I wanted. It use to rap around the corner on the right side years ago but didn't seem to need it anymore to I pulled it out.

There are a lot of over-the-top builds here on GJ that can shift your perspective on things if you aren't careful. While I do enjoy looking at some of the crazy builds, I think most people can relate to a bench like yours. What your workbench might lack in terms of 'wow factor' is more than made up for by the fact that its seen 40 years worth of projects. You obviously did something right and should be proud if it.

That vise looks great. I love the white lettering. Did you restore it?

19 VERT: very nice set up and work. can you tell me (us) why you lowered the one side of the bench cause I think I missed it, but guessing there is a very good reason?

Renegade: isn't it sad how some guys can't see the value in well built old things? nice save and i bet those old woodshop benches will last another hundred years if kept inside and used.

@ 19Vert64; Do you have a YouTube channel? Swear I saw a video recently of someone with a garage shop that looked exactly like yours. I'll have to track down that link.

Thought behind it was different projects are more comfortable to work on at different heights and this gives me that option. Plus the lower section serves as a desk when I have my laptop out there

I like it! Very functional work bench. They are made to be used.

I used to have a tool box like the one on your bench when I was in the Navy. Nice little boxes.

I loved Always Thinkings idea of a drawer beneath his workbench! I did somthing similar over Christmas and it is an awesome place to store power tools. I gained about 10 cubic feet of storage.
