Next year I intend to do another car build with my boy. He will be 6 and its been too long without something cool in the garage to wrench on. Part of that will be lots of body work. I've worked in a body shop which is where I learned body work and some paint work techniques but I've never done it on my own. I have no gun(s that shoot paint ;)) and I think my air system could probably use some tweaking to make it more suitable for an hvlp gun.

In preparation for this I've taken it upon myself to revamp a 1998 telecaster that I've had since my youth. It started out as black and I wanted some comfort cuts so I used a rasp to do that then removed the poly, did some body work, and here is the current state of the axe (mocked up with parts).

I need to wetsand out all the orange peel and I might do another coat of clear once it cures if I'm not happy with the finish after wetsanding and buffing.

Anyhow, for this i borrowed my neighbor's siphon feed gun which worked really well but I think given the artistic nature of this craft and my desire to do this more often in the future I should invest in my own rig.

I'm not a millionaire or a pro that needs to push things through really fast. I just need a good affordable gun that will be consistent. I'm not worried about those 800 dollar perfect atomization guns since my dirty shop will likely require wet sanding anything I shoot pretty much always.

So if you were me what would you get?

Only one clear choice. The Astro Mini Gun either in 1.0 of 1.2 tip size depending upon how fast you like to spray. Here's a link:http://www.astrotools.com/air-tools...uch-up-gun-with-1-0mm-nozzle-plastic-cup.html

Another possibility is this ANI MinGun which is available from spraygunsdirect in England.

I've used both and like both. The beautiful thing about the Astro is that there are no gaskets in the fluid path as there are in the SATA and DeVilbiss mini guns. All metal to metal seals. Also makes it super easy to clean.

I have the HVLP low end gun from Harbor Freight.
Under 20 bucks. Don't laugh, it is an amazing gun. Up to now I've only shot Laquer, repaint of rock chips on my 55. You'll find reviews of it on most any hot rod, classic car forum. It's pretty quick to clean.
Sounds like you have insight into catalysts, reducers, activators and temp/ humidity compensations.

ANI makes nice budget guns. A step up from that would be a DeVilbiss FLG5. Next up from that would be the DeVilbiss GPi. Then the Tekna. If you really want to spend some cash look at Iwata Supernova or SataJet 5000 RP.

In mini guns the ANI R150 is nice or DeVilbiss Sri Pro.

No matter what gun you buy, 3M PPS cups are the best thing since sliced bread.

A full sized spray gun to paint a guitar is nuts. The whole object is about 18" wide. A SATA 5000 has a 14" pattern. A mini-gun has about a 6" pattern and that's about perfect for a guitar. Also the amount of overspray is so much less. Unless you have a booth a full size gun will be impossible to use inside whereas a mini gun isn't that much different than spraying with a rattle can. You can create a mini-booth with a box fan and a furnace filter. A mini gun is the only way to go for this project.

OP, go to Autobody Toolmart and look at some Sharpe Finex guns. Inexpensive and excellent. I have one of the minis and it kicks *** better than the Sata Mini Jet it replaced.

I bought a Finex FX 3000 last year to paint my hood. Cheap enough so if it didn’t turn out good I wouldn’t be upset spending the money on it but something that wasn’t a throwaway gun like the harbor freight ( which actually can do a nice job of spraying). I used it for the base color and clear coat and think it ended up pretty nice.
