Let's talk about jiffy tite connectors

I've read about these before but never ran into them and really didn't have a clue what they looked like. I need to replace some trans lines on a chevy and I guess the fittings are "jiffy tite" style. GM and others say to just use a pick and then use a new clip which would work just fine. But when I work on family member's vehicles I get paid in tools. So a set of jiffy tite disconnects would be a good payment for doing the trans lines.

From my other thread it sounds like most use a pick or screwdriver instead of the actual jiffy tite tools. But are there certain ones that you must have the tool to undo? I'm thinking that even if a pick works most of the time I will still get a set of these. I've heard them mentioned a lot on here about needing a set.

Which style is better, http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0019CL4AI/?tag=atomicindus08-20 or http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HDFDIAO/?tag=atomicindus08-20

Anything else to know about jiffy tite fittings and tools?

6 of 1, or half a dozen. 1 gives more leverage, the other gives more clearance. Right angle pick works just as well

I'm damn sure not scared to buy more tools but they really don't work any better than a 90 degree pick. In fact sometimes on dirty or rusted fittings you'll fight and tug with the juffy tite tool and still end up using a pick.

Pick other tools to get paid in.

I bought both types of jiffy tights in 3/8 size for the coolant and oil turbo lines for the 6.7 powerstroke. But due to space or lack of it, they are useless and I use my long mini pics all the time now.

Sometimes the tools work. They do get corroded in there after several years and can be very hard to remove using the tool. That's when the pick comes out and pry bar. If you use the pick method either have a magnet right there or extra clips, it used to be a big thing to come and ask the trans guy, me, if I had any extra clips because they lost it picking it out of there.

I own the original set by Jiffy-tite tool, by Synder manufacturing They work, some times it is better to use the tool over a pick so the clip doesn't fly into the ether as they are know to do. But I normally just use a pick to undo do them in most cases.

So why are these jiffy tite disconnects so expensive if they aren't really needed and most say that picks are easier and quicker to use?

.

I don't know. When new apprentices come to me and ask if I have the double secret special tool to undo the trans lines, I muster my best ******* look and hand them a pick........

So when using a pick do you reuse the clips? GM says not to and supposedly the disconnect tools let you reuse the clips? I'm planning on getting new fittings for the trans side but not for the radiator side, the radiator fittings are 25 bucks a pop so going to reuse them.

So if I don't need the jiffy tite tools maybe I will get a good set of flare wrenches or a good set of crows feet? They kind of relate to the job so I wouldn't feel so bad telling the family member I "need" the tools to do the job. Just my way of getting "paid" to do work for family members without causing any issues of telling them it will be **.** dollars or whatever. I just tell them "need" a certain tool to do the job! Win/win for both of us since it's usually cheaper then taking it somewhere.

Nothing wrong with following the service manual. They sell the clips by themselves if reusing them makes you nervous. The service manual says to replace them because some guys excessively stretch or damage them while removing them and since this human element is beyond GM's control they just say to replace them. But, if you don't bend or lose them just give em a squeeze and roll them back in until they click into place. You're a sharp and carefull guy, I think you'll notice if it isn't right.

And maybe as payment for the job, an extra long comfort handle pick set is in order if you don't already have one. I like the Snap-On set!

I have the regular snap on comfort handle picks and love them, maybe the long version would be a good addition. Was also thinking about getting a decent set of flare nut wrenches, I have snap on and sk for SAE but only mismatched craftsman for metric. Or maybe flared crowsfeet wrenches. Too many choices!
