I hope the 60 inch Canarm fans are alright. I just finished my 30 x 50 x 14 and have 4 of them in the boxes I bought from Zoro. I will have a wood working area in one back corner and a metal working area in the other back corner with a fan over each and the other 2 fans will be down the middle toward the roll up door where most mechanical work will take place. Kinda laid out like a T. I am also looking at adding a high CFM shuttered vent fan up high to draw heat out of the building. 2 x 6 framed 24 in on center, anyone have any recommendations?

Someone may have posted something like this already, but this sounds similar to what you already have:

https://www.homedepot.com/p/Hampton...Ceiling-Fan-with-Wall-Control-52860/204507386

These move 9600 CFM on high, and they come with an adjustable speed wall switch and plate.

Something you should consider is, your garage is 36x50x16, or 28,800 cubic feet.

One of these fans would turn over your entire garage volume of air exactly 20 times in one hour (this is more than most commerical building HVAC requirements, subject to the room usage of course).

If you wanted something that you didn't want to blast on high all the time for that amount of airflow, I'd suggest getting two or three of them and running them lengthwise down the shop, evenly spaced, or four in a sort of rectangle pattern.

Should be more than adequate and extremely affordable.

I have the canarm 60 inch , 4 of them in my 30x40, 13ft celing . They move tons of air, BUT are very noisy. They make a humming noise on all but high and I'm disappointed with the noise. They do kick **** with CFM.

Skippy,

I figure they'll make some noise......I'll have the stereo playing, so hopefully its not an issue!

gfd_703, let us know what you think of your fans once installed? I am about to place an order for 4 of them for my 40x64x16 shed.

I bought 2 used “airplane” fans... I have them on low speed and the small air movement really makes a difference. 32’x56’...12’ plus ceilings.

I discovered something working in the great room in my barn. The walls are insulated, but not the 22' ceiling. Eventually I'll have cellulose blown in on it. I've been using an old window A/C unit, and it does a surprisingly good job, considering. At table level, it was 72 F. in there. But when I climbed an 8' ladder to hang the drapes my wife is making, it was like sticking your head in an oven. I can't imagine what the temperature is like up near the ceiling. The point of this story is that if I had ceiling fans running in there, they would be pulling down very hot air, likely negating the A/C. It will probably be a lot better once the ceiling is insulated, but it's something to consider.

I have 2 of these still in the box for my 30x48. Hope to have them up this weekend.

I've been debating on this myself. I have a 24x32', with roughly 11-12' ceilings. When I wired the shop, I added 3 boxes down the center for ceiling fans, and even picked up three fans (can't remember the diameters, maybe 50-54" fans). The shop is insulated with 2x6" walls, but can't decide if they will move enough air to cool the shop down any appreciable amount....or at least keep enough air circulating to keep sweating in Georgia humidity to a minimum.

I've got 4 canarm fans in my 30x40 with ceiling height 13 to 15.5 ft. If you threw a few sheets of paper on the floor and turned the fans on high, they would blow all over. The only thing I don't like is the fans blow the heat down till it mixes with the cool air.

Wondering what anyone’s experience with wall fans are. Seems like you could set them up to have one feed the next to the next and really circulate the air. Also had the benefit of being protected from sticking a 2x4 into it by accident.

I would say be careful what you buy if your worried about how noisy they are. I have a portable Harbor Freight fan and it's pretty noisy.

If you go with the Canarm fans and you get the variable speed reversing switch, you need additional wires. I forget but you'll need 4 or 5 wires . I wound up getting a variable speed switch with no reverse because I only ran 14-2 wires.

I put up 2 of the Canarm fans witht the reversible controller, just doubled up 2 14-2 wires. Fans have some noise and vibration.

Interesting subject. I've contemplated adding fans for circulation, these look like they would work out fine, just curious if anyone has surface mounted them successfully? I've got a ceiling of steel siding with insulation above it, so not real excited about trying to get in the attic for a typical install. I'm leaning towards the Home Depot one's since it's close.

I just ordered the Canarm 56” and their variable speed/Reversable switch. My shop is 24x32 with 12’-15’ scissor trusses.

You mean with conduit? If so I've done that a lot.

Just use an octagon and center it on a rafter. Knock out the center knockout and screw a j bolt into the rafter. Pretty much all the industrial fans mount with a j bolt. They don't actually attach to the box.

I was thinking about just screwing a metal box directly to the bottom of a rafter, but was woried about the fan vibrating. It looks like that is an acceptable mounting. The J-hook idea looks interesting, but not sure that I'm trying not to cut any holes in the ceiling if I don't have to.

All the industrial fans hang on a J hook. No attachment to the box. It's just there to contain the wires. The j hook is a wood lag that screws into the rafter.

I noticed this on the instructions as well. Guess I will plan to nail in a few 2x6's between the trusses to mount mine. Surely thats plenty.

I ordered 4 this week from zoro.com and cant wait to get them installed!

Thanks for all the advice in this thread... after reading through and doing more research I decided to go with a Big *** Fan. I didn't want to go through the hassle with installing 4 or 6 smaller fans and possibly not being happy with it.

The fan I ordered is 14' and on high it pulls 11amps and blows about 125,000 cfm. Its actually really amazing and much more airflow than I was expecting!
