I have some 1/16-3/32 steel plate I need to cut. I might cut up to 1/4" from time to time. Does it matter if the steel is hardened or not? What am I looking for? I don't need this all the time. Might use it for a couple cuts then not use it for months. I want something dependable but I don't want it to break the bank so bad I need to get a loan to pay for it. Tell me the in's and out's of these. What to look for and what to stay away from.

electric 4 1/2" grinder and a few cutoff wheels for me....
before i bought any grinders, i used an abrasive blade in a 7 1/4" circular saw for ALL my steel cutting.
the abrasive dust is hard on the saw...

I have the Milwaukee metal saw and really like it for plate as you can easily get a good straight cut. Have used it on 3/16 and 1/4" material with no problems. Also nice that the catch can contains virtually all cutting debris
This...I bought the saw not knowing if it would do well...much to my suprise...it cuts plate 1/4" thick no problem...clean cuts...and with a straight edge, straight as hell...
I have a plasma and carbide blade chop saw...don't use them that much any more.

Im with him, the plasma is a special use at this point. If the Tennsmith can't handle it, out comes the Fein and all is good. Honestly, very worthwhile investment. I tried one about 5 years ago and just like others have said, the chips would KILL the motor. These newer saws are designed to push chips away while cutting.
