Anyone have recommendations on a good builders level that wont break the bank. It's for occasional use only, I'm not a contractor. The one I ordered from Amazon.com arrived all beat up and out of calibration. I sent it back. The one I'm considering is a Dewalt 090PK. I'll be using it to level the footer forms and the block foundation. I don't want to go the rental route, because everytime I do, it seems it's a race against the clock and I want to take my time on this. Thanks.

I dont' know what your budget is but I picked this new DW unit and I think I paied about $350 for it I didn't get the nice case that goes with it though. It works great and has an optical plumb it, and a 20X mag on it.

For leveling forms and footers and stuff like that I use my rotary laser but it was a lot more $$$

William....

what about using a water level? You can get the fancy electronic version at home depot for like 40 bux. We use them all the time for setting up switchgear and utility vaults.

I use several kinds of levels as a surveyor. I agree with W-Cummins - use a laser level for leveling footing forms. Its easy to use. I used one to level columns, elevator shafts, and floors for a 7 story office building. Its perfect for one guy(you dont need a second guy to hold the level rod) and accurate within 1/4".

The laser shoots out a rotating light beam. The user carries a level rod with an attachment that slides up and down the rod and beeps when the attachment is level with the laser. For a garage you'll only need it for about a half day. You can probably rent one from a builder rental place - they should be able to show you how it works if you're not familiar with it.

But if you really want a level, check out a surveyors supply store. They may have something in price similar to the David White builder model.

I've got an old optical you can find those around prettty cheap. Most contractors are converting over to the laser types. Depending on what you want to do and your precision tolerance they work very well and aer easier to use. They are also getting cheaper by the minute.
