How about the narrowest Schulter tile set available with the channel. Then maybe pinch it down to hold the plate. I plan on using this particular edging to hang some signs vertically. Might not be the cheapest but would look great.

Just regular coarse thread truss head screws in the slots. The weight is so insignificant that you don't need anything special. Just don't overdrive them.

Adhesive backed velcro strips. The kind used to hand framed photos/art on walls.

Personally, I'd use nothing less than a mechanical fastener. I would be pissed using some velcro only to walk out to the garage one day and find a license plate laying on the hood of my car and a 2" scratch where it landed.

I guess the screws. I just hate the ceiling to look like the face of a 14 year old boy when I take them down

If you're already planning to take them down, then why put them up? More of a rhetorical/existential/philosophical question.

Clean both surfaces and use 3M command straps. A couple of those, applied with sufficient pressure to wet out the adhesive should easily hold and come off cleanly when ready to rearrange. Screws will be cheaper though

Command strips let go at the most inopportune times. They especially don't like the temperature swings of a garage.

Never had any issues with them personally, even when used in areas with bigger temp swings like a garage. Don't hang a ton of stuff with them but do use them

Yes, I was a non-believer as well until I tried these on a wall full of largish framed photos. They won't come down; especially with something as light as a license plate.

Well just consider both the worst case scenarios:

1 You have to remove them:
Problem-> Holes on ceiling
Solution-> $5 of drywall patch and 5 minutes of your time

2. License plate fall down in your car(s)
Problem-> Scratch on hood/roof
Solution-> Thousand(s) $ of body work and 3 days of trouble and life time pain if it fall on the wife's car.

I mount my old license plates in my recycling can and a man with a big truck takes them away. I can't quite understand why some guys have this obsession with hanging up old junk. Probably the same guys that think the inside of their local Cracker Barrel looks nice.

I’ll bet you have a real pretty garage.

Why would you throw them away? I think just about every car guy has a garage full of plates and some of the older ones from certain places are worth money if they are a special issue or something like that I have never turned in or thrown away a set of plates ever I just hang them in my room since I don’t have a garage at home.
