Getting ready to pour floor and trying to decide where to place lift. The garage is 36ft deep and I want to install the lift as close to the back as possible how much room should I allow between the lift and wall?

Not knowing the style, I will say 12ft. That's with nothing along the wall such as work benches or cabinets.

at my last house I had a two post and it was 13' off the back wall. That is enough room but if you intend on putting any shelves on that wall or storing anything I would maybe make it 15' min. Your probably going to want some kind of bench there against that wall to put things down when your working on your cars.

you said your getting ready to pour your floor, if your going to use any rebar in the pour where the lift goes make sure its not going to interfer with the location points of your anchors because if you hit one placeing your anchors you'll be in trouble because you can't drill thru it, your only option will be to move the hole.

Mine is 15' with a work bench along the wall, symmetrical. No problems for me with it's location.

I allowed 10' 3" (from the center of the column) in my 26' long garage bay for an asymmetrical lift. There is adequate room to move and I am going to add a 2' wide workbench.

Now if you are also going to use an engine crane in conjunction with the lift, I would go at least 15 feet from the front wall.

Rotary gives specifications for suggested minimum clearances for their lifts, I'm sure that the other lift makers do the same. I'd visit a few web pages and I know you will find the info. Suggestion: if they say x feet minimum--trust them! I went with minimum clearance on one dimension and I'm glad I didn't try to get any closer!

Guess I should have said two post and not expected someone to read my mind. The question of symmetric or asymmetric hasnt been decided looking for pros or cons of the two styles? Thanks to all that responded and the rebar placement is one of the reasons I am asking now so I don't hate myself later
