Lift Station Required? Cost?

Building a freestanding Garage, that will eventually have a toilet and Shower on the second floor.. Should this drain into a lift station and then be pumped about 80' into the septic Tank, or, as it is considerably higher (8-10') than the Septic Tank, can one rely on gravity to do the work? (The Septic system was sized for the eventual bathroom when installed)

If I have to go the Lift Station Route, any idea on cost?

By all means, if you can do gravity flow, do it. Lift stations are for situation where gravity flow will not work. Cost of lift station 1000.00 to 4000.00 depending on local regs, what is required and capacity. You would need pump vault, pump, floats, and control/alarm panel.

My first choice is gravity.
Second choice is a lift station. Less costly and less maintenance than a pump. Lift it and let gravity take over.
Last resort is a pump.
I think your situation will let gravity work.

So the second story is 8-10' above the septic? That would lead me to think you would have the drain running mid air to get to the tank?

Or is the ground floor 8-10 above the septic?

I would think 80' of free air poop pipe not the best option.

Your post is kind of confusing. Is the garage slab 8-10' above the septic tank? or are you saying the toilet will be 8-10' above the tank (obvious if its on the 2nd floor)? The sewer will obviously need to run down under the garage slab then to the septic tank. If you can maintain minimum pipe cover and slope then by all means go gravity, if not you have to pump.

I'm guessing I'll need a lift station, but as the toilet is on the second floor, I wondered if gravity alone might be sufficient? Does it have to be a constant down hill run?
Any idea on the cost of a lift station for one bath room?

Understood, no the force of the toilet flushing from the second floor will not be sufficient to overcome negative pipe slope, that will never be approved. You will need either constant slope to the tank or a grinder pump.

For gravity, it needs to be downhill all the way. If you put head pressure on it by letting it fly from the second floor and depend on that to push it uphill later, you will end up with a pipe plugged with solid matter.
It now sounds like you need a pump to chew it up and pump it up to the main line or you need to dig deep and let gravity take it close to the main line and then put in a lift to lift it up the the main. Lifts are less maintenance than pumps, but require that you get the stuff to where a simple lift will work.
I would go with a sealed crock and pump that will chew it up and pump it out. Then you can run a smaller line over to the main.

Grinder pump. Then all you need is 2" PVC to get it to where you want it.
Liberty has a nice one. I use one to pump the poop 200'.

This...I lift my post tank waste up 40' verticle and 300' horizontal as required to get it away from the lake I am on.

But your questions make me suggest that you get one of the local septic guys out there and get some experienced advice. They can tell you what works and what doesn't. Also, the inspector will need to buy off on the perc test for the field...and may have other requirements..

Thanks! I'm just trying to get an idea of the cost and complexity to add into the total cost of the garage... sounds like a small tank with a macerator of some type should do the trick... I'll get a pro in there before we start to build....
