Thinking about getting one of these, and found a good price at this place ...

North Shore Residential Door Anyone deal with them?

Also, my wife's car has the built in remote in her rear-view mirror (Home Link) ... it's a 2010 Kia Sportage. I hear that the 8500 will only work with the included remote, but the 3800 will work with a Home Link. Anyone with experience on these?

I'm interested as well. That looks to be a good price.

What's the difference between the two models? I'd want the Homelink compatibility ..

I have two 3800's installed in my shop. They have worked without any issues for 5 years so far.

Difference between the 3800 and the 3900.

From Chamberlain:

All of our trolley operators are compatible with highlift doors, however in some applications an additional panel may need to be added to the top section of the door.

Aside from our standard trolley operators we also offer a residential jackshaft operator model 3800. The 3800 is ideal for use on highlift doors with up to 54" of lift. For commercial uses our 3900 Light-Duty Commercial Jackshaft Operator is designed for light-duty, sectional doors.

Both the 3800 and 3900 mount on the wall, freeing ceiling space for maximum storage. You can also include the optional EverCharge® Standby Power System that allows you to operate your opener even if the power goes out.

I have the 3800 and it works fine with HomeLink. I understand that the 8500 requires the 855LM repeater to work with HomeLink.

I have one and I'm very pleased with it. Works well, is very quite, and love the deadbolt mechanism with it.

While owner experiences here may be positive with the 3800, the Chamberlain dealer I spoke to (a full service overhead door company) said there were problems with them. I asked Liftmaster about this and they said the 3800 was a good first effort but the 8500 is much improved (didn't say how). Liftmaster says the 8500 is compatible with Homelink in car model years 2012 and newer. That is what I purchased. Our '13 BMW and '14 Honda Odyssey work fine. The Internet gateway works well.

Good to know Bob, thanks.

My biggest concern is running the wiring from one end of the garage to the other. It was easier before things became more finished in my garage.

I asked North Shore Residential Door about HomeLink compatibility:
You asked: Which one will work with the the HomeLink remote control mirrors. The LM 3800 or 8500?
Service Staff: The 3800 and 8500 are the exact same ... Homelink compatibility relies on what is built into your car and we do not have the reference material on it. Usually it will not work and you have to buy the 855LM Repeater kit.

I now have three 8500's....so far they are good. They work with the woman's 2013 Lexus home link. I use the phone and remote to open/close.

To the OP- I bought my LM3800 from North Shore a few years ago. Best price I could find, and DIY installation (for me) was pretty straight forward.
I'd buy another from them if needed. I spoke w/them for a while before I bought and they ARE GDO pros, IMHO.

I don't have any feedback to offer on the Homelink setup. I use the clicker that came w/the opener.

HTH,
Will

Yea, thats what I thought. You see anything different between the LM3800 and the LM8500, besides the HomeLink issue? Probably going for the LM3800, unless they throw in a repeater.:)

The 8500 has more bells and whistles when it comes to connectivity such as using the internet to monitor the opener.

From Liftmaster about the 8500.....
