Help!!!!

I installed one of 2 new Liftmaster 3800's and it wobbles a lot. How much movement is acceptable? It seems like it moves way too much and sometimes it sounds like it's binding.

The torsion bar is only long enough to extend 1" into the unit. I tightened the collar on to 12 ft. lbs like hte instructions say to and it crushed the jackshaft a little, could this be the problem?

Wobbles where?

For starters are your torsion spring(s) adjusted properly? (Can you manually open the door half way and it stay there)

The unit itself wobbles when attached. The door is properly balanced. I took the unit back off the torsion bar and the collar and motor run straight and true and the door without the opener appears to move straight, it's just when I attach the opener they don't seem to line up correctly like something is off.

I guess it could be possible that your torsion bar is smaller OD than the LM collar is set up for. Maybe when you tighten it down, it throws the alignment out of whack.

Do you know the diameter of your torsion bar? What size is your door? Got any pics?

If you think the torsion bar is collapsing when tightening down the clamp collar, you could press a piece of round stock inside the torsion bar. Just from what you've said so far, leads me to believe this may not be the big issue though.

Wish I could help more, I didn't have any trouble with the opener wobbling on either of my 2.

Crushed shaft should not hurt anything. Did you lag it to the wall with the bracket I guess? Does the shaft wobble when you open the door by hand or just with the motor running?

The thing that irks me is that nowhere in the manual does it mention how you align the motor and the jackshaft. Is the motor suppose to be level or does it depend on the jackshaft?????? I initially made the motor level and I guess the real problem may be that the motor was not aligned with the shaft when I leveled the motor and initially tightened it on there and may have crushed the shaft at a slight angle. I tried repositioning the collar at a different clock position but it did not solve anything.

I may have to have the jackshaft replaced.

The motor should align with the jack shaft and then be tightened down to the wall. Unless your jackshaft is perfectly horizontal, it won't work to level the motor and then tighten to the jackshaft.

Either the coupler is on the spring tube crooked, or your spring tube is bent.

That being said, its ok for the motor to wobble a little. It doesn't look good, but unless it really bad (as in 1/2" or something) it probably does not matter.

Tighten the jack shaft coupling before securing the opener to the wall with the angle bracket. Level doesn't really mean anything in this particular case....

Okay so I went to mount the other opener and It has a little movement as well. I did not tighten the collar on this one yet. I snugged it up and pulled the release and rolled the door up and the motor has just a little movement. For those who have installed these, does yours move at all or is it solid when it operates?

I installed mine this past weekend, and it has a little movement in it as well. We should do videos and see what everyone thinks is acceptable.

Anyone else with these installed want to chime in? I installed my second one yesterday and I lined it up opened the door and there was very little movement. When I actually tightened the collar and opened the door the motor moves quite a bit. There is no way both of my doors have the same problem...
