After reading a few threads on jackshaft openers, it seams that alot of you guys love the Chamberlain Liftmaster 3800. So, I'm considering the purchase of one for my single 9 foot wide overhead garage door. The problem is that I have raised the rails from the standard height (to accomodate a hoist) to approximately 11 feet, and the door is no longer balanced. I will probably have to change the existing spring or add a second spring & possibly change the drums. My question is which online garage door parts supplier would you recommend based on service, quality, price etc? I need someone who can analyze the situation & recommend the right parts to fix the problem. I see alot of 3800's for sale on line & on ebay, any suggestions??

If I were you I would just call a local Overhead Door company for the opener and the retrofit. That gives you the peace of mind that it was done properly, and you get the great customer support after the sale.

I went with Overhead Door, and couldn't be happier. Thats quite a claim, knowing the door cost me more than $3,000 installed :lol_hitti

A single door shouldn't cost $3000 installed. You can try local, which might run you $100 more than a standard door for install due to a little extra for parts. Otherwise, try:

I haven't ordered from them personally because I only did a 10" high lift and my cables and springs worked fine, LM 3800 doing great on that as well.

For 2-3 ft of high lift you'll need new cables and drums, but probably not springs. I've read lots of threads refering to these guys and they should be able to hook you up...once you've got your door balanced with those parts, the LM 3800 install is just as normal, and you'll love it.

Thanks for the advice and website information. It seems like the best place to buy a LM3800 is on the internet (approx. $285 + shipping) the local guys want 150-200% more and that doesn't include installation and door balancing.

I just had the local overhead door installer convert my garage door hardware from the original 90 degree track, to run up along my vaulted ceiling in preparation of a future lift. He changed rails, the spring, pulleys, cables, jackshaft and brackets. He probably had close to 2 hours labor in making the change and parts and labor cost me $200. It came out great. The rail now hangs about 8" from the ceiling as opposed to 2 foot from the ceiling before. Now I need a Lift Master 3800 topener!
