Just wanted to share my install of the only opener I could find for a roll up door in the US that was reasonably priced. I searched high and low for a how to video or a similar post with some photos for this type of install, but came up empty handed. Maybe these photos will help someone else in the future.

I started getting tired of going outside unlocking the man door and manually raising the roll up door every morning, so I started looking for a operator. Turns out the options are very few, and there was only 1 for under $500. So a few weeks later I have a liftmaster 3950 on my front porch. I went back and forth with how to mount it for awhile, thinking at first I would have to make a wood frame and somehow screw it to the structure.

The first challenge was getting the gear mounted to the drum. This meant that I had to unroll the tension off the door and lift one end up while I slid the gear over the shaft. This door is a dead shaft type. What I basically did was sister 2 2x4's together and frame a cradle at the top to support the door on one end and using a floor jack to maneuver the door up to give clearance for the gear to slide over the shaft. Once this was done it attached with 3 4" bolts and spacers.

I decided that I wanted to make a steel support since it was a metal building and weld it up and just bolt the opener to it. Strut bar was the most obvious choice since I could bolt it directly to it. Here is what I wound up with. Not the prettiest install most likely but solid as a rock. I'm pleased with the signal range of about 50' and the fact that our chamberlain remotes work with this unit as it only came with a single button wall control.

How do you like your liftmaster 3950 after using it for a while. I purchased an 8x8 roll up from Janus and have been contemplating purchasing an opener. When ordered the door I just went with the manual option. What size is your roll up? In your opinion will I want one with an 8x8 door?

Thanks
John
