I have had 2 events where the garage door would not go down from a fully opened position. Hitting the button just caused the door to go down a few inches then it would go right back up. The first time I gave a downward pull and then it closed. Then after that no issues for a few weeks. It happened again today and my wife did the same off a step ladder. It’s not the safety eye sensor. They are clean and unobstructed. Any thoughts? Thanks

I heard you need a spring return or something to help get the door started going down. Garage door guy here has a second spring they install that helps roll door down when it starts to close.

I researched 8500 a while ago before deciding not to upgrade.

Have you checked the cable tension sensor? If the sensor detects slacks in the roller cable, it will reverse direction and not letting the door go down.

I have more questions than answers.

Providing no sun issue etc with the eyes^^^^this would be the 2nd thing I would check. This is one of the reasons I install pusher springs.

I don’t believe it is a sun in the eye issue. Has only happened twice and was solved with pulling down on the door as I pressed the button.

My GDO does this a couple times a year. I hit the big tension springs and hinges with wd-40 and that has always fixed it. Also I clean the track that the rollers ride in. Dirt, sawdust and whatnot can build up in there.

Again my garage door guy said when he installs a 8500 he installs a return spring on the door that helps the door start going DOWN which fixes this issue. No idea what this spring looks like but he said that it is necessary

Might need the rail lubed, then the rest of that doesn't solve it.

I could see a return spring if it started out having problems due to being marginal HP for the load but after working a few years, seems like a friction issue.
