Morning!

First post in Garage Journal! I'm looking to put a four post lift in my garage, and needed additional clearance from the garage door.

Got an estimate from a local garage guy to come and see how much it'd be to install the 8500 in my garage, along with raising the tracks for clearance. Typically speaking how much does the work cost? My local guy quoted me $1280!? $630 in labor/tracks/springs/cable, and $650 for the garage opener?!

I mean, I wasn't born yesterday...and I understand a slight markup for parts... But over double? When I can order the garage door opener on amazon prime for $315... Sounds a bit fishy here...

Sounds high. I just got a quote of $850 to install two 8500's - and that includes the cost of the 8500's. They're coming out next week. I was going to do it myself, but with the coil springs up there potentially needing to be adjusted - it was worth the piece of mind to have it done right.

I'd call around. I remember calling 4-5 different garage door companies before replacing my doors - and some were sketchy in price. Go figure, I've stuck with this company because of both their price and service.

My garage was new when the three were installed a few months ago but there was nothing to it. The electrician installed them quickly. I would say less then an hour per unit. No adjustment to springs or anything else. Wire had been run for the buttons during construction. Only hole they drilled is one in the track for the lock to be installed. It is not a hard job. Since I have known the electric guys for years and they worked hard on several issues I had elsewhere, when they seemed excited about doing it, I let them. I was also paying by the hour so it was not a costly deal. Go read the directions on line and I think you will see it is a pretty simple deal.

Ask the guy to divide up the different cost b/t material and labor.

You should never pay for the material above "retail" cost. It's not illegal for them to markup the price but a smart shop always compare with other stores. For this types of product, Amazon is a appropriate comparison; therefore, it should NOT cost more than that.

Here's my estimate:

4 hour labor $40/hr
8500 - $315
material - $250

TOTAL should be $750-800

I recently had my garage door tracks raised prior to my lift install...Overhead door quoted $600 and indicated they would sell me the opener for $500 installed. I found a local garage door company that lifted the door for $275. I purchased the 8500 on-line for under $300 and installed it myself in a couple of hours.

I paid just a shade over $2k for a high lift install with the 8500 that also covered the cost of a new high quality insulated door. I thought the price was high, but the other quotes I got were a few hundred dollars more than that. I think location will play a factor into pricing.

I had an 8500 quote last week.
$750 installed
$500 cash and carry (This was $100 more than another place, but he was throwing in the keypad and an extra remote)

I installed mine 3 weeks ago in 2 hrs. Most of the time was running the wires for sensors lock and controller. It's easy to install. As long as the door is balanced you don't need the springs adjusted. (Manually raise the door halfway and see if it stays, if so you are balanced)

Mine was installed this summer during a new build. They were already coming out to install the door which my contractor had covered in his bid and the installer only charged me an addition $550 which also included a key pad and required a second trip to fine tune once the concrete and electrical were complete.

I bought my 8500 from North Shore Commercial Door for $285 plus free shipping. Their web site shows $367 but drops to $285 when you put it in your cart. If you search North Shore Commercial Door you should be able to find a coupon code for free shipping. Also purchased the wireless gateway at a good discount from them as well.

I was quoted $550 each for the 8500's installed - I need 3. I decided I would wait and add them myself after I find out what my house ends up costing after all is said and done. I have the 3 high lift doors installed already.

Thanks for this... Amazon was $320 and I was just about to buy. Always nice to save $35! They were selling through Amazon too (North Shore), but for $320. Can't wait to install in the garage so I don't have to get out and open the door by hand any more.

I just had 2 8500's installed with my two new garage doors. They were $475 each including outdoor touchpads and battery backup (one). If you have any car older than 2006 get them to throw in the repeater or call Liftmaster and they will send it free +$7 shipping. I really like the Iphone app. Now with the garage doors so quiet I don't hear when my kids come in, but I get a message on my phone every time the door opens/closes. I was really surprised with the 8500's how much higher the garage looks, without the center motor. Now just waiting for my lift.
