How much clearance do I need in front of the opener? I have a shelf in that area currently and I want to cut it back, I just need to know how far (minimum).

Bare minimum is 4 1/4" from the center of the shaft to the front of the opener. There's also a plastic access panel cover on the front of the unit. All the control wiring comes in from the bottom, but get connected to the circuit board via the access opening. The top of the access panel opening is approximately 4 1/2" down from the center of the shaft. The plastic cover to the access opening hinges at the top of the opening. The cover swings up about 90 degrees. I suppose you could just remove the cover and leave it off.

I did check the manual first, but didn't see a dimension of total thickness, plus door clearance. Looking at the access door, I will just cut the shelf back to the first stud and have plenty of room. Thanks for the photo.

I recently had my garage door installed and when I got the quote never asked what kind of opener I was getting and just went with low bidder. Well to my shock I got a liftmaster 8500 on my install. Wow have garage door openers advanced, access my door thru wifi, wow! :scared: This makes my 10 yr old chain drive liftmaster look like a dinosaur and the 8500 is so quiet!

I have three of the 3800's. Most amazingly quiet, smooth openers I've ever seen. Balance the spring well, and you're good to go.

Two of mine have been up and running (a lot) for 6-7 yrs...the other a couple of years. Zero issues.
