So I had a new garage door installed on my shed with a shiny new 8500 opener. I didn't have power to the shed when it was installed however I did leave the installer with an extension cord to test out the motor. Fast forward a month later (today) when I finally got power to the shed. The door release cable is supposed to click when pulled to open the door manually. The door does open manually however it won't go back to "powered" mode as the motor just spins freely for a few seconds and stops.
Before I put in a call the the door guy, any ideas?
Thanks!

I assume you tried to pull it again? I believe one pull puts it in neutral for manual opening and pull it again it will be in "gear" again.

Yeah, I tried all kinds of pulling techniques even doing it slow to hear the click that the manual calls for. Seems as if the mechanism is jammed. Nobody touched it since installation.
Tried pushing the cable back in the hole hoping to reset whatever cam might be in there but no luck...

Did the installer run the required steps to set up the adjustments with power plugged in. The manual shows how to do this. The adjustments are required to be set before testing the manual release.
I did my installation myself and the adjustments required are easy.
I bet he did not run the adjustments as he did not bother looking for electric

Thanks Excavator. I'll pull out the manual and look into it. He did have an extension cord at his feet, but like you said, he most likely didn't bother to plug it in.

I am both surprised and not at all surprised an installer would skipped calibration... Maybe he thought you would just DIY it anyway being you're having a detached garage built... That's pretty poor service though, if you ask me. I DIY'd my 8500 install and you'll find it super simple once you crack open the manual.

That said, I hope it is as easy to calibrate after the manual release has been ran as it is before... I hope the manual covers it!

Regardless, the installer is a good guy and has done other doors for us. His prices couldn't be beat and they are an honest company. Worst case if I don't figure it out, They will fix it.

There is no such thing as calibration on these. The manual release has nothing to do with the opener having the travel limits set or not. It is a "manual" release. If you give the rope a good solid tug and it does not re engage the drive unit then something is jammed up and you should call your installer to check it.

I found this thread searching for the same issue. I discovered that I was not pulling the manual release HARD enough. You have to give it a good hard pull to get it to re-engage.

Yeah, this ^^^^^^^^^ I have same opener (two of them). It takes a good tug.
