Hello all. I have a Liftmaster 8500W wall mount opener on one of my garage door and I want to add another wall mount opener to a second door. The 8500W is still available to buy but I was told the new model 98022 is a better option. It's also $350 cheaper. One of the main differences is the 98022 does not use a cable tension monitor. I was told they eliminated it because of issues of it not working properly. I've owned the 8500W for about 5 years with no problems at all and some of the on line videos claim the newer 98022 has issues because it's new tech doesn't use the cable monitor. Are there any garage door installers out there that can give me some advice on what to buy?
Thanks

I'm not an installer, but I own two 8500Ws (they are great and I have had zero problems) and I just installed two 98022s in my new garage expansion last week. Although I haven't operated them that much yet, so far I am very pleased. Cable tension is now monitored internally and the wifi technology (aka MyQ) is built in - no external gateway required. And the wall switch modules now provide time and temperature readouts  (really!)

I know that some folks will insist that more tech means more things to go wrong. Same reason my dad refused to get power windows and AC in his new cars. But in my mind the 98022 is are a worthy upgrade to the 8500W.

My 8500W came with a wall mounted switch that displays time & temperature as well. I believe the P/N is 880LMW.

I've got an 8500W as well and wasn't aware there were issues with the Tension Monitor. I've had zero issues so far.
I don't think there were any problems with the monitor itself, it's just that the installers had to 'freestyle' their installation, and if it wasn't done just right it would cause problems.

Thanks for the replies! My 8500W is working fine with no issues at all as well. Feed back like this really helps with my decision. I guess it all comes down to price at this point. Kbuhagiar, where did you buy your 98020's?
Thanks

PS. I used to live not far from you in Oceanside.

We like Oceanside, we've been there several times since we relocated here. It's seems like a nice community, with lots of great places for lunch after a nice drive.

To be clear I didn't actually install the 98022s, I had them installed as part of a complete package (new garage doors, high-lift rail kit and the 98022s) within our new garage expansion project.

I have the 8500 on my building, installed by guys who installed the door.

On my house garage, I had to replace my overhead and got the Chamberlain RJO101 version from my local Home Depot. The cable tension monitor was the finicky part of the install and took several times up/down the ladder to make it happy. The battery backup has been useful a few times when the power is out.
