Light bulbs for attics

Yes…very early ‘80s

Does anybody remember this style cell phone? I think they came out mid ‘80’s. You can see them used in movies of that era. I certainly didn’t have one and nobody I know did either.

My brother's first cell phone. Paid $0.25 a minute. Added up quickly.

I have the cheesiest UFO light I could find in my attic. The type with swivel heads to point in all directions. Couldn't care less about the temp rating.

if your attic gets to 150F, you mighty consider better designed venting. Even on a 110F day here this attic over a one story only gets to about 115F. It used to be worse but adding better venting solved that. Then in winter, ours is one of the few homes who still have frost on it late in the morning. Our heating and cooling bills are much lower than our neighbors as well. I used incandescents in the attic but the last time my electrician friend was up there he said that the heat from the three lights is more than the sun beating on the roof. He could feel it every time he walked by one of the lights.

Or just look at the switch. It says on and off. Thats a pretty good indicator.

20 years ago when I built our home I put a switch in the hall and a porcelain keyless fixture screwed to a 2x4 brace in the attic.
I wouldn't worry about type of bulb. It should only be on while you're up there.
If you being up there can handle the heat, I think any bulb can too.
No idea how hot my attic gets down here in SE Texas but I doubt 150 and I doubt yours is 150.
Maybe 110-125 at most?
Optimal would be outside temp , maybe a little more if vented correctly.

I've put 3-way switches on my attic lights. If you climb the ladder and forgot to turn on the lights, there's a switch in the attic. If you climb down and forget to turn off the lights, there's a switch on the wall. And I add a porc. fixture with a night light bulb on the ceiling wired to the attic lights near the ladder opening, to tell me the lights are on in the attic because i climbed down and forgot to turn them off.

On topic, I have a bunch of plug in 4ft T8 fixtures. Receptacles installed every 8'. This is from when I was testing the coverage. Decided to have it the length of the attic, and each fixture would cover 2 rafter bays alternating sides. I would convert to LED, but these are good enough for the limited attic use.

I was in a bar one time back then when a guy came in carrying one of those phones. He made a big show out of calling someone so everyone in the bar could see how cool he was, then he put it down on one of those tall tables, the kind meant to accommodate two people sitting on stools. The table's feet were uneven so it wobbled like most of them do, so when he leaned on the table his phone slipped off, landed on the floor and broke. He made a big stink about it with the waitress, but she basically told him tough luck.

But the idiot light is a better indicator Especially for something hidden out of sight. Pilot lights switches are great for things like basements as well.

That’s hilarious. All us older guys remember incandescent bulbs in ”trouble lights” at the end of a long cord used under hood for car repairs and other places. They got so hot they would brand your bare arm if you accidentally touched them. I’m sure those got to 100C or hotter.

I can almost smell the hot-dust smell from the metal one my dad had when I was a kid! The plastic one he had was good until it melted from the 100w bulb dad put in it. LOL
