Wanted a light duty jib crane to mount to a wall post. Plan was 200lb capacity with 10' reach and 180* swing. Friend of mine gave me a new 120v hoist he had no use for. Little overkill but the price was right.

Made the bits for the hinges that mount to the post.

Next dug through the misc bearing bin and came up with a trolley for the hoist.

Welded up and painted the hinges and trolley.

The boom is 2"x 2" tube. Milled a plug that is welded into end of the tube on the hinge side. The top brace is 3/4" rod. The spoon looking deals get welded to the hinge side of the rod. The other side of the rod is threaded.

Boom and upper brace welded and painted.

After installing the jib crane I stuck the lift magnet to my welding table (which is around 2000lbs) and stalled the hoist at 450lbs. Everything behaved as it should. I'm confident it'll be drama free lifting vises and awkward bar/sheet stock around.

For cable management I used an old cord reel that the latch broke on years ago. Knew I'd find a use for it some day. Works slick.

Had it up for a couple weeks now and its been super handy. Wish I had done it years ago.

I would love to have a job crane in my shop for unloading trailers. Sadly, in my block building, I don't have a column to attach it too nor the knowledge how to do it with black walls.

Nice build OP…like the well thought out parts!

How is that vertical wood post tied in on the top/bottom. That would be my only concern based upon the load being out near the end of the boom….

Very nice! 👍
Something like this has been on my to do list for longer than I care to admit. 😉
Thanks. I was in the same boat, now I kick myself for waiting so long.

It's a 60 year old pole building, the post is a 6"x6" oak timber that's in the floor and bolted to the truss directly above the upper hinge. The hinges are backed by 6"x8"x1/4" plates and clamp the sides. The hinges will yield before the post fails. The limits of the hoist itself add additional safety against me being stupid.

Holy smokes. Nice job.

You have a plasma table, outsource the cutting or something else?

Your design?
Yep, I have a small plasma table which is directly under the crane. My design, use Fusion 360 for CAD/CAM. The hinges are a bit unusual because I needed the boom to clear that control box on the wall when swung flat to the wall. They also were going to straddle an air pipe that was running down the center of the post. Which I later decided to reroute anyways.
