Sad day when you can no longer go to the local hardware store and buy lightbulbs. The light bulbs in our dining room light are no longer for sale. Had to get some on eBay…..
"Last longer"? That can be debatable. Not all incandescent lamps were banned, a lot of specialty lamps are still around, some places only incandescent lamps will work like ovens but in most cases LED is quite adequate or out performs incandescent. It's called, "times change". Get used to it. LED's use dramatically less power and last a lot longer.
Yep. Planned obsolescence.Pretty sure they have handicapped led’s so they won’t last long. Buying better quality (e.g.: Phillips) and they tend to be better. Feit is garbage.
I know, it's stupid.I hate money.
Yet, I love money.
This is one of the reasons that I admire those who are off-the-grid. They have the skills, energy and toughness to exist and thrive in a non-corporate environment.I know, it's stupid.
Mostly I hate the love of money, money itself is harmless, but the love of money is the root of all evil.
Yeah, my dad always wanted to live off grid, the closest we ever got was using a composting toilet and living in our camper in a big (and dark) shop in the middle of winter...This is one of the reasons that I admire those who are off-the-grid. They don't really think about planned obsolescence.
Sometimes I feel the easier our lives get, the harder our lives become.
One thing I've noticed is the peace of mind that most of those people have.Yeah, my dad always wanted to live off grid, the closest we ever got was using a composting toilet and living in our camper in a big (and dark) shop in the middle of winter...
But it is something I think about doing from time to time.
If you like that sort of thing check out Gridlessness on YouTube, they have a very nice setup out in BC.
And, lest we stray too far off topic, LED lightbulbs are great for off grid!
There, now we're almost back where we started![]()
Beat me to it. My first thought was "There's a word for this... Progress".It's called, "times change". Get used to it. LED's use dramatically less power and last a lot longer.
Strangely, everyone seems obsessed with "daylight" or whiter colour temp these days, but I don't get it.Color temperature is a big thing too. As is bulb design. Probably not telling you anything you don't know but a warm color range Edison type LED is a tolerable substitute for an incandescent light and I am more sensitive than most.
I've been in my place since 2017 and I think I have one CFL left in the dining room fixture. I replace blown out LEDs all the time. Currently have one in the bathroom and one in the 2nd bedroom blown out. Kitchen is the most used light, replace those all the time.I used all LED lights when I built our house. 10 years in, and we haven't had a single failure.
I’ve replaced every conventional lightbulb in the house with high CRI 2700 or 3000k LED depending on application.Color temperature is a big thing too. As is bulb design. If you don't tell us what brand of bulbs they are I swear I will hunt you down and raid your house to find out!I used all LED lights when I built our house. 10 years in, and we haven't had a single failure.

Yeah I have a feeling after only 8-10 years (and especially after 2020) we may never find a quality bulb again.I bought the first generation of Philips LED lights and they lasted 8 years. Nothing else has come even close... For almost $100 a bulb they were very overbuilt.

I’ve only bought Philips since day one. Zero failures and the house is full of ‘em.Pretty sure they have handicapped led’s so they won’t last long. Buying better quality (e.g.: Phillips) and they tend to be better. Feit is garbage.
have you seen these.Dubai lights seem to fit the ticket but I still haven't seen how you buy these in the USA.
The warmest lamps in the finished parts of my house are the 2700K can lights in the basement. The main level has a mixture of 2100 in the regular fixtures and fans and the cans have 2400K. The outside fixtures are 2200K. The shop and the unfinished part of the basement that has my office is 5000K because, well I gotta be able to see sometimes.Strangely, everyone seems obsessed with "daylight" or whiter colour temp these days, but I don't get it.
My "new" house is full of those and I think they're far too white, makes it feel cold and unwelcome. I found an old lamp in the basement with a very "warm" yellowish light and, though it might actually be a little too yellow, it makes the living room feel much cozier and comfortable.
Maybe you can find a niche market in reselling them to grumpy old codgers who don't like LED's, for an exorbitant priceSeveral years ago when the rumor mill was telling me that incandescent light bulbs were going to be "outlawed", when the crappy compact florescents were the rage and LED's were the new thing with an A19 replacement running about $25 I bought a couple of cases each of 130 volt 40, 60, and 100 watt bulbs. I still have most of them sitting in my shop where they will still be when I'm dead.
I'm not the oldest yet, but I am one of the grumpiest and ain't nobody gettin their hands on my bulbs. I know what I've got.Maybe you can find a niche market in reselling them to grumpy old codgers who don't like LED's, for an exorbitant price![]()
Yeah, there was no real purpose for them anymore. Same with the 130V lamps....kinda pointless. And now they're going to ban alot of the high CRI versions, too.Rough service lamps are not banned.
Well ****. They took those too!
We shouldn't have to say it anymore...you have to use the Kelvin numbers to compare. Terms like "daylight" are just marketing terms and can mean anything that the manufacturer wants. They are not standards.Strangely, everyone seems obsessed with "daylight" or whiter colour temp these days, but I don't get it.

You might want to consult an eye doctor.I simply don't like the light they put out. There's something that I don't understand is going on, something scientific. The light created has less contrast and makes it more difficult to see. They replaced all the lights at work with LED and now I carry a flashlight around to see. It's like there's some light wavelength missing in comparison to incandescent.
They were never available in USA. It was an exclusive deal for Dubai. And it didn't work out. Last I heard, they aren't making them anymore.Dubai lights seem to fit the ticket but I still haven't seen how you buy these in the USA.
That's how they getcha. They do the same with cars....it has to be better than xxxMPG. Also true for refrigerators, water heaters, etc..... Most manufacturers have stopped making incandescents, so they'll disappear before too long.A minor distinction that I find interesting: there aren't really government rules saying you can't make/buy/sell incandescent lamps. There are rules about the number of lumens produced per watt consumed.
Better get 'em while you can. Cree stopped making bulbs about a year ago.I’ve started buying Cree LED bulbs. I’ve been finding them on Amazon. Been much better so far. The cheap/store brands have started flickering randomly after 1-2 years. Pretty awful if you ask me!! Slowly changing over to quality bulbs.
Those bulbs are fantastic!
Yep, stock up. They're banning fluorescent lamps in 5 states already. Wont be too long...The all glass led lamps have gotten decent and available. But before the last couple years there really wasn't anything reasonably priced that I felt was worth buying.
What I really need to stock up on is linear fluorescent bulbs
