Lighted exhaust fan - bathroom

My parents bathroom exhaust fan does not work.... it did work at one time, but hasn't in years. Obviously I suspect the motor is bad, and have been told by an electrician friend of mine that they generally just replace the motors and go. That's fine and dandy, and I would be glad to do that to help save my mother some money, but she wants a whole new fan put in because this one is 20+ yrs old, and the lense is sort of yellowed. I can't say I blame her for wanting that, but I need some help guys. I've heard it is a pain to put whole new units in because they can differ in size, and the frame is built around them. I'm looking for the easiest route to go to replace this. Is there a way to identify the old exhaust fan and purchase an exact replacement? Swap the motor and the fin base, and the lense cover and call it a day? I pulled the lense off, and the fin base off... but can't see any "id" marks. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks in advance,
pcpro15

Edit

Dug into it a little more... and found it.

If this is the one .. go on line and buy the parts or try Home Depot or Lowes .. sometimes they have an "upgrade" kit for the motor/fan that is suppose to move more air ...

Yes, those whole units are not built to come out from below, unless you want to cut out some sheet rock, and put up new sheet rock, match the texture, paint it, etc.

I've replaced one by going up in the attic and removing it from above.....that's the way to do it if you have an attic above the bathroom. And the newer ones have alot more CFM and are quieter.
But it's not an option if you have a floor above the fan unit.

The fan units are made to be replaced, it should have a plug that goes into the base.

Thanks guys. I started looking around for lens assemblys, and ran across this.

That does not look like my lens (similar), but it was listed as a replacement for a 663ln (mine). I thought to myself sweet... that'll work, slap a new motor in and it is a done deal. Well I called nutone for fun to see if they had a cross reference. The lady was real nice and said 763RLN was the current cross reference. I then asked what lens that one from the link above when to. She said... hmm let me look. Came back to the same number :bounce: (763RLN). I figured if the lens will work, im half way there. She said Home Depot normally stocks them. Well... jumped in the truck and :3gears:

Picked it up, brought it home. The motor lined right up and bolted into the old frame. :rocker: At that point I knew it was ment to happen. I did hit a snag with the middle bolt length. The new "box" sits deeper in the ceiling, so I had to make up for it by cutting my bolt down ~1/2" because it was the light bulb wouldn't screw in. Minor setback, got the dremel, done deal. Wing nutted the light bulb shroud up, put the light bulb in, and finished with the new lense. I am a happy camper... my parents wern't expecting this and will save them from a contractor now. They were quoted $700 by one person to install a brand new one. I'm $33.52, and some gas to home depot into it. call it $40. Thanks guys! HD was the ticket.

Most of the time the motor stops due to lack of lubrication.
If you can get the fan/motor out of the box a little cleaning and some grease may be all you need on the functional side.

I usually use the toilet paper that is handy for the cleaning and the Vaseline in the medicine chest for the grease.
I have even used hand lotion for grease. In that case it is still nice and quiet after 5 years.

Then all you need to do is look for a nice lens.
