Lightening/Surge Protection for Broadband Cable

I have Comcast and am relocating where the cable enters the home.

As part of this, I need to reinstall the grounding block. Currently, Comcast has a splitter - one port for the cable modem and the other for no longer used cable TV connection.

Rather than reuse their 2-port splitter with its ground block, I was looking into using one of these TII 212 protectors

My inside cabling is RG6 Quad Shield. Not sure what the orange Comcast cable is.

The installation notes seem to indicate that these are for RG59 connectors and some sort of adapter is needed for RG6. One of the Amazon reviews laments this.

Any recommendations for a similar unit or proper adapters?

The reburied Comcast feed now comes thru a 2" conduit and I have a 2" LB at the house. I have access to the house ground for connection.

I have the same exact unit.

I noticed the RG59 spec but the thing is the only difference between 59 and 6 is the center core diameter is larger on the 6 and the shielding is more so.

However the connectors are the same.

Im wondering if the directions are old

I disregarded the rg59 info and installed it. Havent had any problems with it. Been installed for almost a year now.

Actually I think it was one of your prior posts that tipped me off to this unit.

Are you using it for Comcast internet or similar?

I read thru more of the reviews and it seems many have/are using it with RG6 like you without issue. Hit or miss reviews from works great to useless, most seem positive.

I do see where it is not outdoor rated so me putting it in an enclosure will be proper.

Any other reputable brands to consider?

Anyone use the Eaton CHSPCABLE?

We dont get a lot of lightening here but better to be safe than sorry. I dont rent any equipment from comcast so i would have to replace it.

I have 180Mbps internet and dont have any problems with the surge protector installed on the line.

What are you bonding it to?

Whoever bonded my service did a piss poor job. panel clamp was loose and didnt even bite past the paint which they failed to scrub off.

Whoever bonded my service did a piss poor job. Clamp was loose and didnt even bite past the paint which they failed to scrub off.

The house has a large braided copper wire (~1/4" diameter) that runs from the ground bar in the garage electric panel to the copper water piping in the basement. Oddly, it runs virtually the entire length of the cold copper water line vs bonding to it at the first opportunity. House is on a well with PVC piping to the pressure tank and copper beyond that.

This house ground wire is run along the band board right where the relocated Comcast feed will enter the house. I am planning on using a copper split bolt to attach a ground wire to this wire for connection to the surge protector.

At the prior cable entrance location, there was a standalone ground rod that Comcast bonded to. I discovered this after a storm fried the HDMI cable inputs on the TV and later another storm fried my desktop computer. I then connected a #6 solid copper wire to the above mentioned house ground wire and connected that to the ground rod; 3 years or so later and knock on wood no more issues.

Not possible to bring the cable in near the electric panel due to asphalt driveway and stone patio.

The water line might not provide adequate protection.

I would try to bond to the GEC or use a panel clamp to connect to the electrical panel if GEC is not accessable.

I'm guessing that the center wire stretches the spring loaded contacts so that once you put RG6 in it, it won't properly connect to RG59 afterwards. But other than that, I too can't imagine much of a difference.

good idea but considering RG59 hasnt been used since the late 90s for cable TV, i doubt it would be an issue.

obviously it works fine.

It's still used for CCTV systems all the time. Also for many whip cords to connect a wall socket to a TV / box when you need something more flexible than RG6. Anyway, I wouldn't worry about trying to use it for cable with RG59 at a later date. That's just not happening.

my comment about RG59 use was specific to cable TV use. I will edit the comment to be more specific.

And RG59 cannot be used with digital cable service because it does not carry enough bandwidth for the receivers or cable modems...

I’m not bonding it to the water line.

I’m using a split bolt on the copper wire that is attached to the garage main panel ground. Said wire also connects to the copper piping. Split bolt will connect about midway between panel and where pipe connection is made. The panel ground has a wire that runs out to the presumed ground rods (not visible due stone patio).
