First thing is to read through the two sticky notes at the top of this section, on lighting fixtures and lighting arrangements. Chances are there's a light arrangement in there that is pretty close to your dimensions.

Also, FYI...it doesn't matter too much for this particular question, but it's not a bad idea to include at least a general location in your signature so people know what state or country you're in - lots of questions can be location dependent.

What are you planning to do in the space? Many here like really bright areas for automotive work. With an open ceiling you have nothing to bounce light off of which will decrease the light from a given fixture. What color/surface are the walls? In my 30 x 40 with 14' ceiling I went with 12 two tube 4' LED fixtures and think it's plenty bright. I have a white metal ceiling and white walls. Some here recommended a lot more. Just some things to consider...

In Georgia, I would insulate the ceiling and walls, drywall the ceiling and walls and then put light color paint on all drywall. Spend that money first.

Install your lighting and ceiling fans which will benefit from reflecting off the nice light colored walls and circulate the air in the workshop.

IMHO, When you are trying to put something together on a shoestring budget or even cheaper, I suggest that those who have limited funds and want a shop, spend their efforts looking for free or low priced used things. Light fixtures, toilets, fans and cabinets for example are often listed on Craig's List for hauling them away. They may not be decorator recommended, but money saved on those easily replaced items like fixtures or toilets can go toward expensive long term items like compresser or hoists.

The money invested in insulation and efficiency will overtime cover the cost of LED lighting systems.

Welcome, I'm interested in seeing some pics and also what lighting you decide to go with as well! Finally having my 36x40 detached built in a couple of months!
