If you want fluorescent it's pretty hard to beat the Bounce Lite from Central Tools. You can drop them, step on them, drive on them, it doesn't matter. They just wont die. Central also makes a really nice underhood light which I have, but they're expensive.

I use a headlamp the most, but I also have a cord real with a drop light on it and a few of your typical shop lights.

Then I also made THIS:

It's a copper tube just big enough for C-size batteries to fit inside, wrapped in an LED strip. Then I wrapped the bottom section in paracord for a handle. Measures 18" long with a clicky switch in the bottom end. I plan to make some kind of reflector for it that will focus the light in one direction.

One note about drop lights. You should NEVER use an incandescent bulb in them. If you happen to break the bulb, they become a huge fire hazard if there are fumes around. I've heard several horror stories of fires caused by these lights. I have a CFL in mine, but LED is good too.

Does anybody know what kind of light eric the car guy uses? If you watch his videos he has a 3 or 4 foot long under hood light. I think that would be awesome for bigger jobs.

I have the ATD 80355 under hood light and I use it every where. Love that thing. Works great on interiors, under hood, under the truck, you name it. Great lighting and handy as hell.

Been using the same, but I have been through 3 or 4 corded models as I always manage to snap one in half yearly on accident. Just purchased the magnetic/clip/bungee rechargeable barber freight version for $32 just a few hours ago. In all honesty it will probably stay by the alignment rack for underhood use but we will see how it works, might buy 4 or 5 before they go up in price.

I prefer a headlamp and use a Nitecore HC50 on just about everything needing a well lit work area. Can't remember the last time I used a drop light.

I also have a Husky 5 foot, 2500 lumen 3 panel led work light. Its extremely bright and stays super cool to the touch. It is so bright I used it to illuminate a pond last winter to play hockey. It is removable from the stand, but I usually leave it on and set it up behind me. This way it floods the entire area I am working on and use my headlamp to pinpoint the exact part I am working on. I was at lowes about 3 months ago and they had this luxeon led puck light. Its the HF light but with a giant LED in it. That sucker is so bright it blinds me if I look directly at it. Works damn well.

I think the usual solution to that is to have a kid, and then give them a flashlight and yell at them the whole time. "No over here. RIGHT HERE. For fucks sake. No under here. Why would you think I need it there? Just give me the light..."
