Lighting Help Needed

Hello Everyone,

I recently purchased a house and I'm working on various projects. The garage currently has one Incandescent light for the entire 25' x 25' space. However there is conduit on the ceiling with four metal fixture boxes attached to a single switch. I want to purchase fixtures for the four boxes but can't figure out what would be best. I was considering some kind of an interior flood. Does anyone have any suggestions? The four boxes are approximately 6' apart. Thank you!

Four 8' 4 tube T8 florescent fixtures would be a reasonable amount of light in that space. But 6 would be really nice.

Thanks for the reply, I need a fixture that can mount to the exposed metal boxes that are not flush with the ceiling. Do they have a florescent fixture for that situation?

Since the conduit is exposed, it would be pretty easy to take it down and re-configure it to whatever layout you would like.
A quick and easy option would be to install outlets in the boxes and hang flourescents near the boxes and plug them in.

Not true. You are both wrong. Im sick of hearing this incorrect information!

The only conduit where NM-b(Romex) isnt allowed is underground. If u wanted to use a similar cable in conduit underground then u would need UF-b...

And why are we even discussing this in this thread. No one even said anything about Romex ....sounds like trolling to me!

What he said^^^ and with plugs in the boxes you can put two fluorescents in on box. Don't need to use fluorescents but arguably, (and there will be plenty of arguments), the most practical lighting in a garage.

Thanks for the comments. I think that makes a lot sense to simply install round receptacles in those boxes. It definitely sounds like the quickest and easiest solution.

I've been through the Romex in conduit discussion several times before and as was mentioned, it does not violate code.

Have a code section to cite? It's not allowed in a conduit outdoors, or underground, because those are defined as a wet location, & NM "Romex®" is allowed in dry locations only.

My opinion is it's bad practice in most cases to use NM in conduit but that's just my opinion.

While this thread is still somewhat active I have another question regarding the T8 florescent fixtures. Does anyone have a recommendation on a particular brand? I see them on Amazon and at Lowes and they're really cheap ... Are there brands that should be avoided based on your experience? Thanks again!

Lithonia, or Metalux, sold at HD, & Lowes, I prefer Lithonia since they are as common as dirt. Fixtures I really liked are no longer made, Acme, not kidding.

What to avoid: Anything made by LOA, Lights of America.
