OK, I've read many, many threads here on lighting. Even tried the lithonia tool (with limited results).

My shop is a 42x60 (jpeg plan attached with relevant notes). Two areas are partitioned off, 17x38 or so for motorhome parking, and a 20x20 welding/hot work room. Of the remainder, one 20x20 end will be a storage loft/mezzanine.

Walls will be white painted OSB lower 8', and white metal above. Ceiling is white.

So, basically have 4 different areas to light, maybe with different types of lighting.

1) motorhome parking -- lights directly overhead will just cast a shadow of the m/h, so thinking 4' linears down the "aisle" either side of the rv.

2) weld room -- just need to be aware of blocking lights when door is open...I tend to do a lot of work at night, with doors open. Chain hung ok, but want to maintain minimum 13' overhead clearance for gantry.

3) loft area -- lower area is tractor parking, 10' ceiling. Probably 4' shop lights here. Upstairs, just storage, so probably the same.

4) main shop area...same as in weld room, want to have functional lighting even with bay door open. Upper 4' or so of long wall on that side is translucent panels, as it stands (no lights/power right now) it has extremely good, even lighting in daytime. Want good general lighting for multipurpose (mechanical, fabrication, etc), plus will have task lighting over workbenches as needed. Plan to switch in pairs or banks so don't have to fully light up entire work area (and pay for light I don't need).

I appreciate any and all input!

Use LED highbays in a grid pattern for general illumination for the whole space. Use 2 circuits, 3 if you want, so that unnecessary lights are not on. They'll be dimmable, so use that feature to increase/decrease light to your needs. Dont change the pattern to accommodate for the doors or the motor home. You want to light the motor home area as if it wasn't there, so that when it's not there, you still have good overall light in that area.
You can supplement the work areas by adding a few of the same fixtures overhead, or by using different fixtures at a lower height. These can be on a separate circuit that you would only use when you're welding. Work benches can have their own overhead task light.
Doors are always an issue. Roll up doors solve this problem, but I haven't seen a good way to get light through a garage door
Good luck,
CD
