I have a 24x32 door is on the 24 side trusses run 24 side also. I have 9 8' t8 lights with reflectors. I was thinking 3 rows of 3. My trusses are on 4' how should I attach the lights? I was thinking also put the lights on 3 switches with rows front to back so i can turn the ones above the door off when it is open.

Anyone? I know maybe its a stupid question but the 8' lights barely reach the span so I wanted to see how everyone does it.

Maybe throw some 2x4 in there to screw the lights to, or turn them in the other direction so you can screw them to the trusses. The last option is to leave as is and use toggle bolts after Sheetrock to hold lights up.

Ok thanks for the ideas, but now I am wondering if I am running them the right way. Would I be better off running 4 rows of 2 with the lights running parallel to the door?

The lights I have in my shop are 8ft between the fixtures ends. My fixtures are parallel to my side/long wall, doors are in the end wall. I have three rows wide, four deep, shop working area for the most part is 34 x 64. I have approximately 10ft between reach row, the length of the 10ft sections of conduit. I usually just use the center row of lights for general use. I'd use 6500K rated or higher rated bulbs, not the 4100K, you'll get more clean white light for the same wattage. Are you wiring in conduit or Romex? I put my lights on motion sensors controlling a 20A RIB relay and can switch each light individually if I desire to put light just where I want it. It saves on the light bill.

I am going to run the steel covered wire for the lights. I just cant decide if they should run front to back in 3 rows of 3 or side to side in 4 rows of 2.

I'm going to guess the doors are on the 24ft walls. I'd run 2 rows of four with the trusses. I'd run 14/3 BX cable instead of 14/2 BX, that way you can hit two lights with one pull, you'll share the white and ground, you can run into one fixture and out to the next, making the connection inside the fixture and not have to use a metal box. That will give you the option of switching both lights. If not just run 14/2 BX and switch both together. I ran everything 12 gauge in my shop for the lights and receptacles.

Its 24x32 the door is 18x10 on the 24 side the trusses are 24. I see a lot of garages with the lights running parallel to the cars and the side walls but not a lot the other way that is why I asked. I was going to run 3 down the middle and 3 on each side not sure how close to the sidewall they should be placed. I was going to run 2 switches 1 for the lights above the door and another for the other 4.
