Ok Gang -

.....so I got a bunch of these cheap Commercial Electric insulation rated/air tight recessed ltg cans (high hats?) at about $4.50 apiece. The inside of the lights have a "rating" sticker that says:

MAX 40W Type/TIPOA19
MAX 65W Type/TIPOBR30
MAX 75W Type/TIPO R30/PAR30/PAR30L
MAX 120W TYpe/TIPO BR30
MAX 150W Type/TIPO R40/PAR38

I have three separate branch ckt strings. See Pxs

String 1 illuminates the 01 flat, comprised of 18 ltg fixtures, spaced about 2-feet apart and intended for gen illumination of a storage space.

String 2 illuminates the aft main deck, comprised of 13 ltg fixtures, spaced about 2-feet apart and intended to provide general navigation (walking) illumination of the aft main deck area

String 3 illuminates the aft main deck area, comprised of 10 ltg fixtures, spaced about 1-foot apart and intended to sit over a workbench and provide working illumination (I have CSS and need much light)

Question: What lamp rating would you use to determine conductor size?
I based the design on the 75 Watt that computes to 14 AWG /15A OCP - however, if I later use anything larger, particularly for the 18 string ckt, then I'm out of bounds.

What will the building inspector say/invoke - or will he/she not care since they only look at cond size/ocp protection?

I don't think he'll have anything to say, if he did bring it up, I'd politely tell him "I've done the calculations and with 75w lamps I'm still be below 80% of the breakers value. Here's my numbers if you'd like to double check".

That'd work until he asks "what's the maximum wattage lamp the fixture can take?" 220.14(D) will be what he cites.

Personally, I'd do it to code. I don't care to take chances with inspectors and I really hate rewiring.

Good work - and thanks. I was concerned that since the fixtures exhibited multiple ratings, including a higher wattage ratings than the 75W, that the inspector may say something like "since its possible to install a 150W lamp, I'd have to use the higher rating ...bla bla"

Grrrrrrrrrr, damn you. Tell me you had to at least search for that and you did not pull that article out of your head.

Rinny, I'm sure you have probably looked up the article number, he is right.

OK - I have up to the 2002 NEC and not the latest - however, after your comments - I did find a similar cite in the 2002 saying that they need be computed based on max rating, etc. However, @ 150W for the 18 ckt string, at 80%, I'm being fed from a 30A breaker - meaning - I need to run 10AWG?
I don't think I can push the 10 AWG through the fixtures opening with even astroglide!

There is something wrong here - and I think it has to be the rating of the can - it seems peculiar to me that this can has a rating of 40W all the way up to 150W!! ....Lemme do some research and I'll let you know what I learn - however, the Ace man appears to be is correct-- Thanks

Ok - I got the Motts....spoke with Cordelia Electric - supplier to Home Depot for the subject light -- the max wattage depends on the trim ring. Since I am using the T5 trim (supplied with light) the max bulb I can use (and maintain listing) is a 75 Watt Type PAR 30, R 30, or BR 30. Therefore, I'm OK with 15 OCP and 14 AWG for the 18 CKT string. I thought I would have to hunt down someone in China to ask - however, the number supplied took me right to their knowledgeable tek support guy ! Thanks to the Ace & LoneGun for your help!

That is one hell of a shop,But I do have to ask.

Why sooo many cans near the wall under the mezzinine?

Isnt that a little overkill on the lighting?

Thanks much...The dense light cluster of 10 on the end under the mezzanine is above where I'm going to put a long work bench. Since I have CSS - I need as much light as I can get. However, as you gently suggest, this density of light is approaching overkill - however, I am not going to use 75 Watt incandescent lamps - but LED PAR 30s that are equivalent to 45 Watt incandescent in terms of light outpuy - yet only draw 5 watts power.
