I keep reading lighting threads trying to figure out what I need in my shop,
36' x 40' with 12' ceilings, and I am confused.

Right now I am planning on 4 rows of lights, with the "rows" going from left to right in the 36' width and then 5 fixtures in each row, running from front to back in the 40' run. I'm planning on using the Utilitech 4' shop fluorescent fixture with the T8 bulb with the brightest rating Lowe's has.

I'll be running them so that there is approximately 4' between the ends of the fixtures, and I'll start the first row approximately 4' in from the wall and space them about 8' apart.

Does sound about right? I showed this to an electrician who said "What, are you going to do surgery in there?" So now I'm wondering if I am on the right track.

16 Tandem 4-lamp (4ft F32T8) 8ft strip lights, thus 64 lamps.
4 rows of 4, 9ft x 10ft spacing.

This is what I would do as well, however I would run them the opposite direction from front to back.Don't waste your time with silly little four foot fixtures,T5,LED,HO or any other foolishness, individually switched rows of eight footers mounted end to end are the way to go.

If you do go for the 4ft fixtures/lamps make sure you get the fixtures that have the 'instant-on'/'cold start' ballasts, they are only a few bucks more per fixture at the big box stores (~$10 vs ~$13 per fixture).
