I am looking for different options for the lighting in my new garage addition. The garage is 27x40 with 10.5' ceilings. The garage will be finished to feel like living space so I was thinking of going with 6" LED can lights w/ dimmer.(I dont want any hanging lights) Will those put out enough light? Are there other recessed lighting options? Also, what is the rule of thumb for how many can lights are needed for a space?

Thanks for the input!

First, take a look at the sticky notes at the top of this section - there's a lot of information in there about lighting, what fixtures to use and how to arrange them. As for can lights, they're good for accent but be aware they don't work the greatest for providing working light in a garage; there have been a couple recent discussions on this very topic that you may be able to find down the page a ways.

Since it’s living space like your house rather than work space, you don’t need as much light. Use a portable light for task lighting when you do work. For a shop, can lights don’t give as much or as wide light per unit as a 4’ LED. I considered them but would have needed 40 of the 8” 2000L cans I was considering instead of 20 4’ wrap lights.

For a compromise look at surface mount or recessed 1x4 or 2x2 flat panels.
