Lighting Orientation. ...

I did search to see if I could find an answer to my problem but it seems like this is a difficult question to answer and the answer is different for every situation.

Anyway, my shop space is 21x27 with roughly 7 foot ceilings. It's just a tinge more then 7. (I'm dealing with what I got ) Also there is a beam running down the center of said space (a factor that may or may not be handy). And I will primarily use the shop for leather working/general putting around.

So I have 6 t8 4 foot fixtures, that I am planning on using. Would you orient the fixtures length wise or crosswise in the space? I know there will be shadows with the low ceiling height, but I would like to try and diminish them as much as possible. Task lighting is in the works over the benches.

Thoughts opinions?

My opinion from the info you provided....
If you have task lighting in mind for the work benches, the 6 fixtures will be there for general illumination of the space. In a 21 x 27 space, it wont make much difference, so you should be good no matter which way you choose. The only thing that occurs to me that the tubes should be oriented in the same direction as the entrance/exit of the space. In other words, if there is a garage door, it would be better to be looking at the lights from the end rather than the side. It's less glarey that way. (Did that make sense?) When entering a room, you dont want to see the entire length of the lamp across your eyesight.

Thank you! I hung them up and well, I don't really like the temperature of them. At least I think lol. I bought 6500 lights, I thought they were bright, just don't seem like it though. What temperature would you recommend?

6500's are blue. I hate them, too. Most common is 4100. Those are nice and white.
Many people confuse the colors with brightness. There is no difference in the amount of lumens, only the color of the lumens.
Your preference, but choose either 3500 or 4100.

For shop space I prefer 5000. To me 3500 is too yellow.
