lighting placement + fans!

At this point I doubt construction will ever get to the point of installing lights... but just in case everything comes up roses soon I need some help arranging lights. The thing is, lights are already bought, as are the fans. My issue is not really optimal lighting but keeping strobe effect to a minimum while still enjoying overhead fans.

Garage is 40x30x18. Fans are two 120" total diameter units, 18.x" drop from install point (would prefer lights near fans be below them to further minimize strobe effect?). Lights are high bay units: 3"x17"x48". I have eight of the lights.

The placement around the fans doesn't have to be symmetrical but if it was it would be kinder on my OCD every time I looked up :)

Any help would be appreciated.

Here's one I think holds promise:

And another attempt, don't think it's as good as the first:

No links whatsoever. No link to light fixture. Plus Fans are a PITA WRT Lighting. If you, OP, are seeing links in your post, you're the only one.

Not sure why, Imgur links in the second post. However, my examples aren't needed to come up with a solution. All the information needed is in the OP. But if you must know the exact specs of the lights:

The second drawing is undesirable to maximize your lighting, but tell us more of what you are using this garage for and if there are garage doors, where they are located? Is there going to be vehicles, and if so, where will they set? Arranging lighting always depends on what you are doing with the area.

IMHO, It is only a garage, why would anyone want ceiling fans stirring dust in a garage? How many hours a day do you plan t be in the garage with those fans running?

will be a personal working garage. Layout will be fluid. double front door along one of the 40' sections, single rollup door on the opposite side 40' section. Not sure about where the lift will go yet.

I would return the fans and get smaller ones and add a few more lights. 1200sqft doesn't need two 10' fans.

He better get a dimmer if he adds more fixtures. The ones he has are 30,000 lumens ea. Though more fixtures would fix the spacing issue in his plan. Max fixture spacing for 18' ceiling is around 18' (fixture center to fixture center).

Well spoken by someone situated in a very temperate climate :lol_hitti

The OP is in TX. I'm in TN.

I put an overhead fan in my previous garage (in AL), and used it from ~May to ~September every time I was out there more than a few minutes to help kill off the oppressive humidity/heat.

I put a massive wall mount fan in my curent garage, which I like much better. I disabled the auto oscillation function, and point it where I want it. Same usage season as my previous house/garage, but now I also use it for helping with fresh air during stinky activities (Fumes from brake cleaner, etc).

OP, the big question is, are you ceiling mounting your lights, or hanging them below your fans?

If you can hang them below the fan, I think that would be ideal.

I had 12' ceilings in my previous garage with the ceiling mount fan - I was happy with lighting level, but often had on more than I needed to help reduce "strobe" from the fan.

snorky18 - OP did mention dropping fixtures below fans to reduce strobe effect - which does work, but fixtures would need to be mounted to avoid movement and as fixture mounting height is reduced, so is spacing criteria. Drop the fixtures down to 16' and fixture to fixture spacing should not exceed 16'. The lower and father apart the fixtures are, the less even and more shadow prone the result.

I ended up going with this layout for the setup.

Electrician did bring along a reel of his own chain so I think they are about a foot lower than I though they would be, but still not a bad setup.

I put 3 rows of 5 lights and 2 6" fans that are below the lights. If you look up, you can see a little strobe effect, but at floor or working height, you don't even notice it. And I'm very happy with the amount of air they move.
