I will be running electrical to my newly built garage soon so I am trying to come up with a plan for the lighting.

The garage is 40'WX30'D with 12.5' ceiling. I am planning to use un-painted OSB for the walls and ceiling and the primary use for the garage will be automotive work. From the reading I've done on this forum, it seems like I will be looking for 50 to 100 FC.

With the 12.5' ceilings, would the 4' T8 fixtures discussed in "the best light fixture ever" thread work or should I be looking for something brighter?

If anybody has a similar size garage and ceiling height, what was worked for you?

Running a calculator supplied by a lighting manufacturer worked for me. I used Lithonia. Designed for 50fc at the work plane. After install, I measured the light level to be 53 fc.

It would be perfect for those fixtures, but if you can find them, 8' would be better. I use fixtures that will take (4) 4' lamps, but two 8' lamp fixtures will be just as good. Three rows of either (3) 8' or (6) 4' butted together to make 24' rows would be what I would do for my own shop. I've wired a lot of 40X60X14 or 16's and I use three rows of (6) 8' and one 4' so the rows are 52' long.

Thanks for your input sparky.

I've been doing some searching today on both the fixtures and bulbs but I'm still not sure where to currently get them for the best price. I'm also trying to figure out what brand bulbs are good quality. I'm guessing the brand of fixture doesn't really matter since its just the housing and a few wires.

I also got the attached lighting layout recommendation from Primelights to use 9 of these fixtures https://www.primelights.com/collect...4-foot-stingray-shop-light-highbay-auto-light

I can get these for right about $1200 shipped. Doing the math on the 4ft or 8ft 2 bulb fixtures and bulbs, I don't think there would be any savings and it may even cost more.

Does anybody have any input on the Primelights or the lighting layout they provided?

I did a 40X60X16 shop in June, the owner decided to supply his own lights to save a few bucks from what I suggested. He went through another supplier and wound up with pretty much the exact same layout you have, complete with four lamp 4' fixtures, he may have gone through primelights, that I don't know. I do know there were places with less than adequate lighting and I had to add a couple of 8' four lamps that I happened to have on hand. The next time I order fixtures I am going to get two extra and add those in that shop as well, but it's good enough for now and I'll be needing something to do this winter.

EDIT: I think the FBO fixtures were six lamp. Regardless, the lighting was poor when compared to what was expected.
