I sure don't know but it is an interesting question. My first thought was do they even need lighting protection as they are metal and would conduct electricity around and down anyway. Metal building may be too light though.

Lightning protection is a specialized trade & is not a DIY thing, the need for it I would think depends on the part of the country one lives in.

Although where I live lightning striking a building is rare, it did hit the only Fred Meyer store built in CA.

I would call a lighting mitigation contractor. In Colorado I use "Mr. Lightning" in Colorado Springs. Even if you are not in the area, they are usually more then glad to answer simple questions over the phone.

I've lived in some of the most lightning prone areas in the world (Florida West coast, South East Asia) and personally I'd not do anything to add lightning protection to a metal building.

Trivia: I now live in NH where lightning storms are quite infrequent: and I've had as many near misses here as anywhere else. My closest near miss in NH was about 150 ft. In SE Asia I've been in buildings when lightning struck (which dropped lighting fixtures from the ceiling and did a lot of damage to the communications gear), and have had two other close shots in NH both of which did damage.

The biggest hazard is lightning coming in on power lines! Protect these and you're probably going to be OK.
