Some of you have been wondering what it looks like using 6" recessed cans instead of tubes.....

I have the drywall up and will start the tape and mud tonight.....

The ceiling is going to be painted a semi-gloss white....not sure on the walls yet....not a lot is going to be exposed...I'll be adding a lot of custom cabinets...gray in color....more on that later....

I'm very happy with the light distribution....

I used 24 cans divided in 3 zones...
Zone 1 - Front half of garage...not much goes on there...mainly vehicle parking....first pic

Zone 2 - My workbench area (back right corner)....and I'll be adding under cabinet lights once they are up.

Zone 3 - Wood working area (back left corner)....the second pic is of this area.

The garage is 20' x 25' downstairs...

The spacing varies....on average there is about 3' between lights.

What kind of bulbs are you using? I've got cans as well and just used CFL bulbs. In the parking area I just used the equivalent 60 watt CFL's with no problems/burnouts in four years. The work area I have the 100 watters and have replaced six of them so far. I might have to try some different lights and see how they compare for light and handling the heat inside the can.

Most of them are 23W CFS's=120 incandescent....I have a few 70w equiv bulbs in there....

I also have a mix of soft white and bright white....the soft whites were a killer deal at Costco....4 bulbs for $4.

Lighting is even better now....I have the ceiling primered...tomorrow I'll be painting it bright white...

I'll have a better idea of the lighting after the walls are painted as well....just getting the drywall up made a big difference.

I know this is an old thread... Was wondering if the author had any pics of the finished space? I am looking to do can lights in my shop and trying to get an idea on how it will look
