i have some 4ft lights hanging in my garage but when i open the door it covers up one of the lights. Its fine when the door is down but how can i light that area when my door is open? try to post a pic later.

Portable work lights on tall stands.
Side wall mounted lights.
Lights mounted on supports that span from wall to wall just under the door.
(They make door tracks that mount close to the ceiling to allow more space for the lights under, instead of above the door.)

I have three lights in that area - one gets covered by the door, the other two are on either side to provide light when the door is open.
I put in (home-made) pendulum lights on extended arms. The trick is that you reduce overhead height -- although I only park a car on one side. The benefit is you have the same light whether the door is opened or closed.

It's kind of goofy, but it gives me light above the bench I have at the opening of the garage.

Code wouldn't let you hard wire exposed to the face of the door with an exposed flexible wire but you could locate a duplex receptacle such that a cord and plug would just reach the fixture in both the up and down positions. maybe make a home made fixture like Jack Olsen. Maybe use LED's.
